What would be your Holy Grail bass(es)?

I sat in a GC for the first time in a long time and tried most basses they had. I thought a Nate Mendel P was going to be it, but I didn’t love the neck. I also didn’t care for any of the American Fender necks. Didn’t like the 4003 neck, either. Fell in love with the Player II neck. Right...

Just how bright were the 80s?

Interesting topic, and I think there's a few things at play here. To be clear, I wasn't alive yet, so this is all secondhand on my part. I do think a lot of mixes and sounds are definitely bumped in that high range. Part of that could be the development of the first run of digital effects as...

Definitely can't fit a business card under there, I put the strings on and tuned it up. I figure I'll let it sit with the tension for a bit before I make any neck adjustments. As-is, it's E, A, D strings, frets 1, 2, and 3. Dead fret. Everything else sounds okay elsewhere on the neck. Also...

Aesthetically, we're looking pretty good. This was about 15-20 coats of wipe-on poly. Many mistakes were made and corrected to the best of my abiity. You can still see woodgrain and texture, which I actually like in this case. If anyone's reading this and thinking about doing it themselves...

Moving - how many basses do you really need?

It's hard for me to consider selling what I have, but playing both guitar and bass, and recording, I've kept a number of instruments. It's about 10 total at the moment. I could sell off one of the acoustics and one of the electrics to get it down to 8, but I'm happy with my 3 basses: I feel...

    Guitar/bass pick question

Dunlop Tortex 1.0 for both. I usually play with fingers for both guitar and bass, so if I'm using a pick, it's to really dig in for a different tone. Definitely not any kind of technical speed player--I just like a more rigid feel.

New bass... wide choice too many doubts

The P-Bass is great for drop D...anything rock, really. It just has that kind of tone that's instantly recognizable. I do love my P-Bass, and I use it more than anything else. It's been my main bass for a long time, so it just feels like home. Your Warwick might cover similar ground depending...

New bass... wide choice too many doubts

Very much love my JMJ. I'm not a relic guy, but it's an extremely comfortable bass to play, sounds great, and just feels like a solid instrument. JMJ with flats (also not something I expected to really like) is an incredible machine. For the cost you can get a JMJ used (around $1000 I...

Yes, it is the minwax wipe-on. The neck got about 15-20 coats (didn't need to go too heavy on that before it felt comfortable), and the body is up to about 20 now. Still building those up, but doing my best to let it properly dry between coats...takes quite a while! Definitely doing a lot of...

    NAMM & Fender

Some of the CV and signature Squier guitars are incredible instruments for the price they originally cost, so that was only a matter of time before Fender leveraged it. I have a Squier Simon Neil Strat I love to pieces. One of the most comfortable necks I've ever played. A lot of those series...

Appreciate the response. The wiring all has clips, so it is solderless. I never minded soldering, and I have other pickups I think I'll ultimately put in there, so I might end up replacing aspects of the wiring anyway. I did spend an equivalent of maybe 4 or 5 hours sanding the body before I...

Still working on my coats of poly. Neck looks great and just about done. Made some extremely light passes with sandpaper on the fretboard to get rid of the rough feel and it feels perfect now. Body is a work in progress. I put on a coat of poly for the front and sides, but something odd...

    NBD Lakland Skyline 44-02

Only saw the top horn at first and was expecting wine red. That burst is a beaut.

Guess I'm just used to my Strat and P where the ground is always to the back of a pot. This kit is also wired with connectors, so the hot and ground off the pickup selector go to a clip that can attach to a clip wired to the pickup. I get it for a basic kit, but I kind of want the inconvenience...

That's fair. It's more because I was thinking of gifting this (if it comes out in a way I'm happy with) to a guy who's been something of a mentor to me for the last 15 years or so, ever since I was in my first serious gigging/recording band. I wanted to make sure it was something he'd be able...
