    First P bass

You mat not believe this, but it was a 73 fender fretless that I paid $50 for. I still have it and am afraid to use it because it is so valuable, I'm afraid I might break it. I gig in my 2009 fender p. If I break it, I might br able to survive.

What bass to pick for a retirement bass?

One suggestion. Buy an accordion. After some time with it, any bass will be light weight, beautiful, and you wife will love to hear your practice.

First bass, what am I looking for? Jazz or Percision

I'm a die hard precision person. That being said, I highly recommend the Jazz. The P bass lacks flexibility and in many cases, they handle like a tree stump. The jazz isuch more playable and will help you develop skills more easily.

What do you bring to the stage that only you know about?

I don't have anything, but our keyboard player carries a cufflink that once belonged to James Brown. Yep, that James Brown. I touched it once.

How many pedals do you use on a job?

Being an older guy playing older music, I have always been really happy with my Ampeg head, really old 4x10" EV speakers, and an active bass. I have just started using a chorus pedal on some songs to add a slight richness in sound. Dont know how long I will be using it.

Lazy sub drummer, bad gig (not humor)

Sounds to me like BL hadn't done his homework. If the sub doesnt show up to rehearse, then red flags should have been flying. I bet the almighty BL has learned his lesson. After all, it's part of professionalism. Public humiliation is ego, not professionalism.

How many pedals do you use on a job?

Has anyone seen Janek gwizdala's wall of pedals? That is beyond my comprehension.

Are 5 strings on the way out?

It's almost impossible to play piano scores with a 4 string.

Who is the most successful 'minimalist' bass player you know?

Verdeen White of EWF...as long as constantly jumping around on the stage doesn't take away from minimalism

    Slapping and Popping Technique

Make sure your mid range on your equalizer is boosted. This will help you cut right through.

What is the best way to develop internal timing?

That's an excellent question. My struggle is working with the band. Tempos tend to fluctuate, sometimes dramatically. As the bass player, I feel it is my job to help rein that in . Back in my days of being a horn player, I learned to feel the micro pulses (16th or 32nd note beats) while playing...

Why now are so many basses featuring the "whale hump"?

I bought the ibanez sound gear version because it was on sale and felt just right in my hands. I read reports about greater sustain, not true. It really has no specific benefits that I can see other than it feels like it was made for me.
