How many pedals do you use on a job?

Over the years gone through experimenting and chasing after the 'holy grail ' for the absolute bass sound. Thought I found it a couple of times but didn't. Have come to the realization the best sound for me (for most gigs )is a simple array of pedals (with no tone manglers ) to enhance a solid punchy sound.

Four or five depending on the board I choose to take. At the core it comes down to having a tuner, octave and overdrive. Other pedals come and go but those three have become essential.

I usually dont use anything with an active bass, but I know I am in the minority. No compression. I like chorus and reverb occassionally. I use a DI box with passive basses.

What do you bring to a show and punch in for more than one song.

I used to play through a bunch of pedals, most of which weren't switched on that often, so I bought a multi-effects switcher which I used mainly as a mild compressor and muting tuner, but it was pointed out to me that my basses sounded much better direct (unbuffered), so now I have just the Peterson Strobostomp HD with True By-Pass.

Not counting the tuner, 3. Boost and compressor always on, Vintage Microtubes for punching things up once in a while. Usually I keep the sustain on the comp at noon. Must have gotten bumped. Otherwise these settings are pretty typical.

I use the Line6 HxFx because it fits in any venue, under my tilted amp, it gives me the tools that I need, and it simulates pretty good most of my favourite efects... Not the best sounds,but pretty good

When I did gigs, I would either just plug n play or use a Boss ME-50B. For jazz gigs, I would usually plug n play. In the studio I use a few pedals occasionally, but my main effects unit is a Lexicon MPX-1. I actually have my eye on a few pedals rn. When I start performing again, I’ll probably put together a small pedalboard.

Being an older guy playing older music, I have always been really happy with my Ampeg head, really old 4x10" EV speakers, and an active bass. I have just started using a chorus pedal on some songs to add a slight richness in sound. Dont know how long I will be using it.

The KWB distortion is my preamp nowadays, its eq is not very versatile but it makes my bass cut in the mix without adding unwanted grit.
