I was 15 and had just gotten a G&L L-2000 bass at Christmas. --- Lucky bastard. If I had gotten a G&L 30 years ago I would've bought a lot less basses from then until now. (I find the L series extremely versatile and recently pretty much thinned my herd down to a L2000 and a L2500)

I prefer to be as close to the High-Hat as possible. The High-Hat usually marks some form of the division of the beat and allows me to maintain a better sense of time and meter. I've found that if I can hear that, I lock in tighter with the drums.

I have a hard-fast rule. I don't spend more than $500USD on a single piece of gear. Only time I ever broke that was when I found a Mesa combo for around 650. As another poster noted, used is the way to go. Oh and by the way... It ain't the arrow, it's the Indian.

I know you said not to get into it, but I'd say it's still relevant as I've had similar experiences. Show up to some 'traditional' gigs with a fiver or a more 'modern' looking axe and some guys will freak or at least give odd looks.
