    Flats that sound like rounds?

EB Slinky cobalt flats have roundwound underwrap the flat cobalt (see picture of an G string), in my experience its the most closer to a roundwound sound, it has some of the growl of a used nickel plated roundwound , the E string sound most focused than dadario chromes, at least for me

What equipment and technique for this sound

old treath but here is my advice.. a P bass o a J with the neck pickup only, a foam mute or some kind of material in the bridge, and play close to the neck with a pick(carol kaye style), now in the amp remove all the mid spectrum, only bass and treble, and if you use flatwounds strings you will...

    Pickup height really DOES matter

my squier jazz bass had some overtones that i didnt like, a kind of chorus tone, i lower the height of the pickups and i hear the diference, of course i had to rase the level of the amp, but i hear and feel the bass better

Rounds to cut and Flats to punch?

yesterday I was in a concert, an afro cuban style band, the bassist played a good 5 string fretless bass with a good amp (big cabinet ampeg) but she used flats, i couldnt distinguish some notes, too muddy and not a lot of punch or thump, like lifeless, the armonic content in a roundwound string...
