well, dummy coils to work end up having to be parallel in the circuit which means the impedance of the circuit (read the pickup) is cut in half, so you end up with a different tone than the pickup without the extra coil - just as you do if it's built into the pickup either series or parallel...

I agree that a nice way of upgrading is to go with a Kluson style tuner - they will generally not require drilling out the post holes - or only minor filing - and they have a nice vintage look and feel to them - and are accurate to the era of those basses - not that the 50s Danos ever had...

yeah - the closed tuners were EXCELLENT tuners and the Ds are cheapo crap - that's what I said. But the Ds are sUPER cool and more than functional on the bass - I've never had any issues (or with my Bass VI which I played pretty hard).

sorry - yes some of the guitars had The ones with better tuners were the later ones from the same era. The very first ones had the D and plain cheapy covered tuners - neither is a great tuner - but the D ones are the coolest looking uner (cheap or quality) ever made.

I wouldn't worry about it - I COULD be wrong (about it needing moving or it not being a prototype) or maybe there just happens to be enough movement in the bridge for the guage of strings on it (the ANGLE of the bridge plate makes a HUGE difference on Danos). Or just SUPER LUCKY!

Technically, you're right, in that - all the Danos are the same instruments with different combinations of neck and body, but more accurately, it's a dc guitar with a long-horn neck affixed.

Almost certainly - it's not impossible there were "prototypes" like the ad is suggesting - but I don't think they tend to get out into the world - and this is a classic trick for selling something someone made as "valuable" and "rare" and not just a cool project.

Yeah, I had one too. It is indeed mud - but, that's the point - it's Fender's answer to an EB. It is definitely not (for most people) an all purpose bass, but it does what it does.
