    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Hooookay... You know how it is, right??! First thing you know you're heading overseas for a couple of weddings, then you get a new job, then you have to rennovate someones toilet and bathroom (because you promised, once... whilst drunk), then someone 'sort of' offers you money to make a...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Holy. Sh!t. (... I've created a monster!?!??) Ok, she's near-enough-finished, but she's in storage (for safety - long story... which I'll inevitably have to explain now). I'll get her out on Sunday for photos and grovelling. Sincerely hadn't realised this thread had taken on a mind of...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Just when we'd all lost interest... Riiight. Me and this headstock have been having a disagreement. I'm presently on the 4th iteration, but with high hopes this will be the last. Various things weren't working out: Abandoned the gold logo. Tried it solid black - thought it would look...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

*sigh* If a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well. Wish I could disagree, but you're totally right. So (!) I've cut the lacquer right back with 400 grit, picked all the lacquer out of the inlay hole, de-masked/re-masked, and started again. Photos later (I hate posting mistakes until...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

I was a GoldenEye man myself (N64, natch). Nothing quite like four-player splitscreen on 15" TV... gives me a headache just thinking about it... Aaanyho: Headstock is about the right colour... The colour pearls were acting very oddly this time and started to migrate after spraying...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Fear not! This weekend has been earmarked for my stringéd friends (the Queen be damned)! Updates soon.

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Gone a little but larger and using jumbo (Jescar Evo stuff) - doing a 'faithful' restoration went out the window given the original condition, so I thought I'd update a bit. Anyho- back to the headstock: All masked up... ... undercoated... ... silvered (?)... ... and...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Absolutely, 100%, spot on! ... much like this: (sorry, I got bored over lunch) Thumb-screws are purely aesthetic - in reality they're unlikely to turn accidentally as there's a reasonable amount of tension (from spring and string); the machineheads are much more likely to detune...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Both right actually. They're brass thumb screws mounted on brass motherboard spacers screwed to some M3 stainless stud. Sorry about my zombie-thumb. Got the brass thumb-screws off of eBay here...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Apologies, I'll get some pics up tomorrow. Living in the remotest city on Earth means it takes blimmin' ages for anything to get here in the post. This arrived yesterday though, so I can get on with the headstock.

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Aaah sunlight my old friend: ... but wait, is that another bridge mod I see??! Yes, yes it is. (brass thumb-screws for intonation) ... and frankly my dear, it looks awesome. The colour scheme is now officially black & brass. ... which means the gold machineheads are out...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Only a perfect, fret-shaped burn in two toes. Indeed! Aaaaaanyho! Finally the silence is broken with something worthy of your eyeballs! After a lot of mucking about, disastrous mistakes, bad luck, inexcusable idiocy, and perseverance I've arrived at probably my favourite moment of...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Decided to go ahead and trim the fret ends anyway. Normally I'd use a pair of end nippers, but since these are in the 'toolbox of mysterious disappearance' I thought I'd improvise with a radius block and a Dremel... ... and by Jove (!), I don't think I'll ever use the nippers again...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Progress as promised (yaaay!): Fretboard cleaned up, re-sanded, dents-filled, oiled, slots re-cut and new frets hammered in. Gave each fret a dab of CA as some of the slots were still a teeny bit rough from where the old frets were pulled. Overall, looking lovely though. I might...

    Restoration: Roadstar (II) to hell

Really sorry for the delay in proceedings, I've been unpacking this little lot... ... and to my dismay, one of my toolboxes is missing :hmm: ... the one with all my (expensive) router bits and a couple of (expensive) planes in. I'm just clarifying with customs whether there was a...
