Have you looked at something like the Kramer Duke?

What is the Largest Available Acoustic Bass Guitar

If you want an ABG that is halfway comfortable to play then the Tacoma Thunder Chief is the loudest I've heard with decent tone without being way oversize. They come up used in the $500 range. I think Epiphone and Dean made copies of the Tacoma that are pretty affordable as well. A full size...

Wishbass Club 2.0....Out of the Ashes

Sandpaper and TrueOil are you friends when you buy a Wishbass. I did quite a bit of reshaping/sanding to get mine the way I liked it. Multiple coats of TruOil for the finish. Plays great.

Roasted maple tru oil - sticky - options?

Just a thought, Tru-oil is not compatible with some of the oilier exotic woods. When I put it on Cocobolo it wouldn't fully cure and stayed soft/sticky. I had to strip it off and spray a thin layer of shellac on the Cocobolo and then put the tru-oil on top to match the rest of the base.

Roasted maple tru oil - sticky - options?

I used about 4 coats of tru-oil on the Persimmon neck on my wish bass (avatar photo). I then sanded it with 0000 steel wool with the grain until it was satin smooth. Then buff it with a cotton rag. Turned out very smooth and not sticky at all. I think your mistake was putting wax on it.

Wishbass Club 2.0....Out of the Ashes

Have you tried a different cable? Sounds like you may have a bad/cold connection somewhere. Mine has the stock J pickup and volume pot direct to the output jack that I re-soldered when I did my rebuild and it is dead quiet with no shielding or extra grounding.

Facedown Bass Cab - good or bad idea?

To create bass you can feel on the dance floor you need low frequency. Use a octave pedal into a subwoofer.

Toyota made basses? Check this out

Please recommend me a decent, inexpensive fretless to experiment with

I was in the same situation. I am a sucker for pretty wood and don't mind a little woodwork. I bought a used Wishbass for next to nothing. A little sanding and true oil finish and I have a great sounding and playing fretless for a couple hundred bucks all in. There are several for sale that...

The bass that was a pleasant surprise

My Wishbass! Bought it as a cheap way to see if I like fretless. After lots of sanding and a little reshaping, it is my favorite bass to play and has fantastic tone and mwah. And you can't beat the exotic wood combination.

    Semi hollow questions

Are you looking for a true hollow-body (like my Conrad above) or a semi-hollow body with a solid mid-section? A true hollow-body typically gives a bigger more open sound with resonance and thump in contrast to a semi-hollow which in most cases sounds like a typical solid body with lighter weight?

    Semi hollow questions

If you are looking used then their are lots of 60's-70's 335 style bases that are really great. Here's mine:

Satin finishes, do you like them?

Neck yes for the smoothness and lack of stickiness. Body a big no. They rarely stay nice.
