Try Woodworkers Supply- 5/8 dia works really well in both my Kays. Maple,hickory,walnut,oak,cherry-all worth trying.

I have two '50 Kays, both like 5/8 sound posts much better than 3/4. Both are dense spruce-they ring good when dropped on tile floor-walnut sounds worth a try. After spending several dollars, I found both do best with Spiracore lights for pizz. Both posts are about the same position as yours-one...

With a good set-up and strings it will sound as good as any Kay.

Considering a new & better bridge for my "50 Kay S-9--Any opinions as to best brand for plywood bass? Probably will go with fixed type.

spiracores, light guage, play great, big sound and seem to last forever. they are available for 1/4 size. a good super-tuning set-up will get a lotof sound from a 1/4---but as much as a 3/4.

borrow the money if necessary, buy the kay berore they change thier minds. with the right strings & setup, the kay will have about twice the boom as the m-3 .

anyone have an idea of the lifespan of spiros ?
