I just got a
Phil Jones Bass BG-120B Bass Cub Pro. Wow. It sounds as good as my Ampeg gear, if not a bit better. And it's only 17 lbs total.
Now, to be fair, I don't play out and this will not be load enough for a larger club gig, but to play at home or to jam with my friends on...
If you are looking for a pj bass, the aerodyne is the way to go, most of the time. Like all instruments, where it was made is not as important as how it feels. Pickups can be changed, but the feel is key.
Here are some sound clips of the old lace sensors vs the nordstarnd npj (W&W)
Played through Ampeg pf-500, eq set flat, no effects, pups in a Fender Aerodyne p bass. Same strings. Tone knob wide open.
These are just for fun. I know they are sloppy.
These are all the lace clips

Holy crap! I just got my npj blade set (warm and wooly)n imy aerodyne p bass. I'll post some before and after sound clips tomorrow. The npj blades sound almost twice as loud and have waaay more tonal options than the lace sensor man-o-war pups i had in there. They were a step up from the...
Have you tried DR strings? I know the black beauties are available tapered. All 4 strings tapered, not just the e and b strings. But, it's a 4 string set and then you buy the b separately. And it seems to be only 50-110 set.
In my fretless, above, I don't get any hum, even with the big blade single in the neck position, but the cavity is covered in copper foil. The active preamp probably doesn't hurt either. TBH, I would not have put a jazz pickup on the neck, but that was the cavity that was already there.

@rubberweed
I've been looking at these for my fender aerodyne. Any chance you could post a sound sample? Are they more aggressive than most pj setups? How would you describe the sound?
Thanks
Fantastic question!
I have 3 basses currently. My pbass is definitely my primary .I also have a fretless Carvin and a Gretsch hollowbody. I think the answer is as subjective as anything else involving gear is. I like being familiar with my instrument so I know that I can make it do what I...
You are correct on using mostly parallel and SC positions with my current flatwound strings .I am going to try some pressurewound strings soon. I think series might work better with a brighter string . I really like the sound of the SC in the bridge and neck pups. I never would have tried a MM...
It's the 5440ls. I think they randomly change features from time to time, just to confuse me. Lol. Show a pic of the 3 of yours together. I'm betting that's a nice pic!
