EB Cobalt Flats, which gauge has better balance? 45-100 or 45-105?

Ready for a mind blow? I find the opposite approach is true: Heavy strings are easier on the fretting hand; harder on the right hand. The reason is, you can lower the action with higher tension strings, which more than makes up for the resistance to pressing them. (But makes playing with the...

    EBMM StingRay Special Club

Ty! I love the maple neck/board look and feel (Especially de-grimed), but it's a tradeoff; it's very sensitive to changes in humidity. (You can measure notable swings in relief day-to-day compared to my rosewood-board/maple-neck bass). I believe this is just the nature of one-piece necks!

    EBMM StingRay Special Club

Cleaned and re-finished a maple board and neck. I wasn't expecting the grime to come out; this was intended as preventative maintenance, but most of it did! Oil soap + Tru Oil + Gunstock wax. More involved than the mineral oil I use on rosewood, but don't intend to do this again for another 20...

Lakeland 44-02...D string has less output than others, G string has more output than others

Try with the pickup selectors in various positions: Neck only; Bridge only neck coil, and bridge only bridge coil. FYI, I had the neck pickup on mine's output go to 0 at some point (all strings); had to replace it.

    Stingray 5 worth it ?

I have had a stingray5 for 20 years; my dad bought it for me in high school; was my first non-starter bass. It has held up, and I still play it; one of the two I own. Solid instrument, but... is heavy. Fine for sitting, but not great for standing unless you are big/strong/don't stand for long...

    Truss rod adjustment measure

My 2c: Flat (no curve) is fine or perhaps ideal, but you don't want any back bow. Necks will change curvature with humidity and to a lesser extent temperature, so. Goal: have it so the largest normal fluctuation you see causes the neck go straight; the intent being to make sure it never has a...

    Set it and forget it?

I concur that this is another [indirect] factor: If you play with higher action, fluctuations don't matter as much for practical purposes. While with low action, you end up balancing minimizing action and not having fret/board noise. The bridge saddles don't move on their own, so that leaves the...

    Set it and forget it?

I can def see the truss rod not needing to be adjusted much in these cases! I mentioned the strings because changing to a thicker (or otherwise higher tension) string will bow the neck more for a given truss rod setting, and I can see a significant difference it how the neck curvature oscillates...

    Set it and forget it?

To those saying they rarely touch the truss rod: Have you ever used a single-piece maple neck? Those are much more responsive to humidity changes than one with a rosewood (etc) board glued on. And further: Do you periodically check the curvature? Can be done in a few seconds by fretting the...

Why no filters on most basses?

Sort of a non-answer: Eq on basses and amps are not great; not enough bands, and more importantly, you can't customize the bands, and often in an awkward place. (E.g. the 10kHz treble control on Stingrays) This is fine in some cases; let the DAW or mixing guys set up the EQ, but it would be nice...
