Set it and forget it?

To those saying they rarely touch the truss rod: Have you ever used a single-piece maple neck? Those are much more responsive to humidity changes than one with a rosewood (etc) board glued on. And further: Do you periodically check the curvature? Can be done in a few seconds by fretting the first fret and one near the end, then observing the gap between string and frets between them. Do you ever change string brands or tension? (e.g. gauge)

I avoid single-piece necks. So no. The vast majority of mine are three-piece at a minimum, plus the fretboard.

I don't usually change string gauges. Hell, I don't usually change strings!

I can def see the truss rod not needing to be adjusted much in these cases! I mentioned the strings because changing to a thicker (or otherwise higher tension) string will bow the neck more for a given truss rod setting, and I can see a significant difference it how the neck curvature oscillates over time between my one-piece maple necked stingray, and a diff one that has a rosewood board on it! I bet the 3-piece will be even more resistant to changes from humidity.

The frequency of relief adjustment is bass-dependent for me. Even so, I check whatever I'm playing most every few gigs. About every 10 gigs I examine the entire setup. Tweak whatever is needed. Frequently, nothing.

As a side note, I once owned a 1997 StingRay. That sucker seemed to perpetually gain relief. The "wheel" was getting tweaked so often I wondered if I'd run out of adjustment. Never did, so I guess it was loosening up?

Fast forward to Dec '25, I get a StingRay Special. That neck's been rock solid. I adjusted a bit this month, but that's not unexpected for SWFL. Maybe the roasted neck? Who knows, but I'm happy with it.

I concur that this is another [indirect] factor: If you play with higher action, fluctuations don't matter as much for practical purposes. While with low action, you end up balancing minimizing action and not having fret/board noise. The bridge saddles don't move on their own, so that leaves the neck curvature to potentially sabotage your setup unless you stay on top of it!

In theory it should be. But wood is very idiosyncratic. I’ve had single-piece maple necks that never budge (an ‘89 G&L SB-2), and multi-lam sandwiches that should never budge but needed regular attention (newish Ibanez EHB). It’s just really hard to generalize IME.

The only truly consistent tendency I’ve observed over 55 years of owning basses is for necks to stabilize over time as they age. You can help them when they’re young to stabilize in the shape you desire long-term. That’s when they need the most attention. …and of course they need adjustment with string tension changes, obviously.

Yup. It's all good because once the saddles are set correctly, all that needs to move from then on out is the relief if necessary. I think people overcomplicate the truss rod. It's not a big deal. Everyone should get to know how to do a setup. It's so simple.
1) nut slots
2) relief
3) saddle height (action)
4) fine tune 2 & 3 against each other a bit

5) If there are new strings involved you likely will need to adjust the intonation last.
 
Where I live, the temp and humidity SWINGS are enormous. And my house is far from sealed (1915 vintage with mostly original windows) ... Right now I can get from 10 to 60 percent indoor relative humidity from one day to the next! Edge of winter temp swings can be 30 degrees celcius (-20 to plus 10) in a single day. I have about ten very nice wooden necked instruments that need serious retuning almost daily!
I have one all-composite monocoque (Basslab) that sits in the same room and NEVER needs tuning (or action adjustments)...

For years I had a good friend who could do anything with a guitar or bass. He'd do my setup for me and take care of anything else I may need done, and I got to help out a friend by paying him for his work. Then he passed and I was lost, but my basses were very stable so I played them for quite a while with no setup or string changes. I bought a decent little MIM J and proceeded to take it apart for cleaning and to use as my training bass. I learned to do basic setup and started keeping that J in shape, which TBH didn't take a lot. I checked intonation when I changed strings and made sure I didn't have too much clank and that was about it. These days I play so rarely I don't worry much because my basses hold setups really well.

If you get a bass that is really out of whack or just was set up terribly, the first set-up can take time and be tricky. After that, it's really easy to take care of little adjustments. Fretless set-up is a little more work, to get intonation right.

Yep, I wound up running through a bunch of basses, mostly MIM J basses. I'd get them, detail them, new strings then a setup to my liking. I like mine low so that's where most of mine wound up was as low as I could get it and still get good output and little to no clank.

The true meaning of my question was, "Who else DOESN'T CARE if the neck changes back and forth, and simply adjusts, ignoring the truss rod?"
But I don't mind that the thread went in different directions!
