I use a USA Peavey Fury (P-bass). It's comfortable and gets the job done. I have used many other basses and with our less than stellar room acoustics and amplification, it really didn't matter which bass I used. Go with what works for you.

I would recommend Yamaha at this price point, especially the BB series used. Solid enough instruments to gig without having to upgrade all of the hardware. The pickups will get the job done easily enough.

My one and only bass is strung BEAD. I play weekly at church and the old hymns rarely use the D let alone the G string. I find BEAD gives me more logical playing positions, it puts Eb in a better spot. The only downside is that if you use tabs a lot, you'll have to transpose.

Try looking around the local used shops also. I have found some pretty nice playing cheap, mint condition Squiers lately since everyone seems to need fast cash. You should be able to find something good for well under $200. Then upgrade it to fit you.
