Hi! I have a p bass that I really like the sound of it "acoustically", and I would like to reproduce that exact same sound when plugged. My opinion concerns just MIM p-basses, never owned a fully original stock jazz (my "Jazz bass" is actually a p bass body with an AVRI Jazz neck bought from the stratosphere). I own three P basses, all of them MIM and needless to say, they all sound different between each other. So here it goes...

Did you check the nut height? Maybe it is set too low and it will buzz regardless of an appropriate bridge action.

Maybe the "correct" answer depends highly on what do you want to achieve with this bass. If it's a keeper, then, by all means, modify it to the best of your abilities and/or budget. On the contrary, if there's a slight change of selling this bass in the near future, then I wouldn't tamper with...

Given that your bass is wired active I would hide the flaw with a battery box route. The luthier did assume responsibility and that's a very honorable thing to do, not all people stand up to their mistakes. This issue has several solutions, Let it pass and keep the friendship. :thumbsup:
