Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

Yes I do refer to the second chord of the verse. I can see where I got you off track. Always tricky to do this work via posts. There seems to be a consensus building for B major due to the country genre as opposed to the natural Bm. However, the guitarist is playing B7 so I’m leaning toward a...

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

Great advice, thanks! Yeah that A note is the flat 7th in the B7 which would normally make it a great choice, but it’s the root of the next chord, so playing it can sound like changing chords too early if I’m not careful with it.

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

Haha! Yeah no capo I thought you were referring to using a passing note to bring the song back to the home chord of A. No worries thanks!

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

Where you indicate (B) might you mean A? That’s the I chord so I believe so.

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

The B7 would imply mixolydian but in this song it serves as the second scale degree of the key, A major. So I’m not sure all the mixolydian notes would fit, as the B7 isn’t the V chord of the key. I think this is what you mean when you say see what sounds good.

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

Makes sense. Our very capable guitarist is playing B7 so I’m inclined to use the root, 5th, and/or flat7th for any little fill I might do.

Sweet Virginia (Rolling Stones) - what’s that chord?

I’m looking at the second chord of Sweet Virginia by the Stones. The song is in A major. The root of the second chord is B. I’m torn (and frayed..) among three possibilities: Bm - The second degree of the A major scale is Bm. It sounds like it fits. B7 - Gives it a blues feel. It also sounds...

How do you manage to schedule gigs?

Regarding August, my bands don’t do many gigs then. I might have one August gig between four bands. Not only are members often away, a decent amount of our usual crowd is away as well. I don’t expect much gig activity, or even rehearsals, until September.

    Help my back

The one I use is from a company called Slinger. It’s been a huge help. Good luck.

    Help my back

Great thread for me, I’m in the same boat at 65. I use a strap that can be worn as a harness but I double up the two straps over my left shoulder so it looks the same. I think it was mentioned above. But the big advantage for me is that it also fastens around my waist, relieving my back of...

Smoothest process for leaving a band

Thanks everybody! Lots of great advice for me to reflect on. (And the funny replies are helpful in their own way too. Humor cures many ills.) You all rock.

Smoothest process for leaving a band

I’m currently in four projects which has become too many. The band I’m intending to leave after over ten years has gigs in July and October, which I plan to play since I committed to them. In this position, would you inform the group now that you’re planning to leave in October? This would give...

Where & how do you find "others" to play with?

If there’s a School of Rock anywhere near you, they have adult programs. You can play there with musicians who have quite a wide range of proficiency. Often, a few folks in those programs, the more committed ones, will break out on their own to form a band.

A resignation letter. And a response.

What a great story. I had a teacher once tell me “if you’re thinkin’, you’re stinkin’.” Some truth to that it seems.

Thought Process When Changing Chords on the Fly

Bill Wyman, for me, makes great use of descending from the second scale degree of the chord. He does it to descend to the C and also to move down to the F. That second note of the chord is so close by that I often forget what a useful option it can be either for a major or minor chord. (The...
