I'm only into fountain pens myself. Check lamy 2000, these are my daily scribing tools. Got a krylon version in medium, and the latest stainless in fine. Amazing smoothness with the bulletproof inks from Noodler's Ink. I positively hate roller pens, they are mindless and characterless lackluster...

And I would say wood is the most timeless, look at the classical string instruments, all only wood! It's only lately the piano went black, before its final form, pianoforte was wood-looking. Now, I must admit some harpsichords are solid color painted, even decorated with fresques and landscapes...

On the finish question, we disagree, but that is enriching. I always looked at solid colors suspiciously. I'm always wondering how is the wood really behind. Fender prices make me laugh. Some manufacturers make neck through builds, others claim this or that wood influences the sound in this or...
