5 string buckeye burl/mahogany neck through

I'm only into fountain pens myself. Check lamy 2000, these are my daily scribing tools. Got a krylon version in medium, and the latest stainless in fine. Amazing smoothness with the bulletproof inks from Noodler's Ink. I positively hate roller pens, they are mindless and characterless lackluster hateful tools that any fountain buries in the instant (a tad over-emphasizing here, you noticed I' m sure)!
Typewriters! Am I write (pun intended). What is with those machines and their mechanical efficiency?

The turquoise pack is much smaller than I thought, but at least now I know I'll need to order more than one for the bass.
There's a nice variety of sizes in there, so I'll probably put the bigger pieces where I can, then fill in the rest with the smaller pieces where needed (I know, that's going to be tedious).
Those of you complaining about it looking like toothpaste might appreciate that it's not ALL blue (or turquoise...) so that should give it a more interesting look.

I did not catch you'll use real turquoise crushed. That's better. I did not mean wrong about the thing, I was just meh about a flat turquoise blue like filler. Now if you fill with turquoise cristals, that definitely will look better. Sorry, my misunderstanding! I know turquoise and that can be really beautiful (can try azurite and malachite too, to add more colors (I'm geologist so you see...)).
I love fountain pens (probably the only 17 yr old in England who does) and last year I was given a Nakaya and a Platinum 3776. The 3776 has become my everyday pen, it's just perfect!
I'll try to remember to let you guys know when I start making fountain pens. I really would like one for myself too. What do you normally pay for them? I need to look into places to buy the parts. I know Woodcraft has them, but they're pricey.
Here's some turquoise experiments. It's more difficult than it looks because it's like picking through sand to try to find a piece that will fit here and there, and then they don't fit... Then they keep falling out, then I put them back, then drop epoxy on them and the turquoise starts floating around instead of staying put, then I try to push them down and they stick to whatever I'm pushing them with...
I'm not sure why the color is different in every picture. I think my phone was trying to auto white balance and not doing it right.
As you can see, the burl doesn't have nearly as many or as big of voids as that bass I posted a couple days ago, so that's good. The voids do have a nice pattern to them (on the actual bass top piece) that looks like it's exploding from the center (subtly), so I think that will work nicely with this.
Now I have to wait and see what it looks like when it's sanded.

it will be interesting to see if this works out. There might be a really nice visual texture due to keeping them in chunks.

I am not really a huge fan of the turquoise void filler, but I think you need to crush the turquoise into smaller pieces to make it look right. If it doesn't completely fill the void, then it just looks like rocks stuck in the wood.
you can buy crushed turquoise at amazon. I think crushed turquoise is the only nice way of filling the voids
Another test piece just because I had to mix more epoxy to fill where it sunk in yesterday anyway.
This one went a lot faster and was a lot easier. I used some of the smaller bits (the smallest ones are hard to see in the picture, but there's some over on the right third in the smaller holes. I just sprinkled them in the holes and poured epoxy on top out of the mixing cup, then spread more epoxy around the rest of the burl. They didn't float around nearly as much as yesterday.
I was curious to see how this would look around a piece of bark.

There are sanding pads that counter top makers use to level and smooth marble, you could glue them in clumps then grind them/polish them flat. Sure it would be, but you wouldn't get the natural striations in the stones that larger pieces will. Actually a lot of turquoise is "reconstituted" made from crushed. It's held together with acrylic, and impossible to tell the difference unless you are an expert or you burn it with a hot needle, so I may be wrong. Amber looks really nice as an inlay too. I'm excited to see this build completed. I inlayed crystals and a good trick if you are using dark wood and say an amethyst or something clear, is to put a tiny piece of mirror behind it. Led might be even better, or tacky., either one wouldn't do anything for turquoise tho.
Silverplated hardware would look sick with the turquoise, and there is a red stone I think called bloodstone? That lapidary s use together with it.
