    "Sound of wood" strings

Sadowsky strings sound great. Did you try his S/S on the Warwick? They work great on the heavier Bubinga/Ovangkol/Wenge wood combos.

    Thinner strings?

Unless your Day Job is baking cookies in the bottom of a hollow tree, you should be able to handle a narrow-neck 32 - 34" J-Style bass, as long as it's light. I agree that a "Hofner Style" Violin bass would probably be the lightest and most comfortable; as long as you can get the sound you need...

    "Sound of wood" strings

As a "Wick user, I can tell you this: I've tried the majority of strings on mine for the same tone you seek. What I came to, and have stuck with for years is this: LaBella Deep Talkin' ROUND Wounds. Nickels sound "rubbery" on the Warwicks and Traditional S/S can be clanky. These DTB Rounds are...

    Thinner strings?

Epiphone makes a "Tobias Toby" model that's light and easy to play, but you may want something with a narrower string spacing, so check out the Ibanez line. If you want really small, they make a Mikro model which is downsized in scale and weight. Personally, I don't think it's critical for you...

    Thinner strings?

I agree with technoticlan about round-core DR's. Definitely easier to play, but you still want to try to select the best materials and gauges, since DR offers a few options.

    Thinner strings?

What kind of bass are you playing, and what kind of music/sound do you need? The size (scale) of your bass could determine the best gauge and type of string. There are lots of options... let me know and I can give you some good recos.

What strings do you use for a jazz style bass?

The Deep Talkin' Round Wounds are not as commonly used as the HRS (now called Stainless Steel) BUT... if you want a strong, deep fundamental with a sweeter (not zingy) top end, then definitely use the Deep Talkin' rounds. I use them on almost all of my basses, especially the J's. Oh..., and I...

Ditto for LaBella DTB Roundwounds... My string of choice for deep bass and balanced tone. The Stainless (formerly Hard Rockin' Steel) have a punchier midrange closer to Rotos but still with BIG BOTTOM... (talkin' bout mudflaps, my girl's got 'em!)

Good brand Strings for 5 (E A D G C low action) and string height issue

saxmachine's method will work too... that's kind of how I do it. Pick the desired height of your first and last string, then gradually set the others in between. This makes it easier regardless of whether it's a 4/5/6 etc. It will automatically follow any radius. I set my height based on the...

Good brand Strings for 5 (E A D G C low action) and string height issue

Radius is a secondary issue, as long as the strings rise evenly as you set them from high to low - this is so that the rise FOLLOWS the curve of the board. In you example, with a +.1 increase, the G should be set at 2.1. My only question: from what point on the neck (which fret) are you measuring?

GHS Boomer OR Super Steels, Ken Smith Rockmasters and LaBella Stainless Steel.

    Scale length

Yes... Jason is wise! You need to consider the WIND length needed to clear the nut and the tuning posts (nothing to do with silked or non-silked strings), or you run the risk of weakening the core and breaking the string. I just went through this with a set of "standard long-scale" strings for a...

Good brand Strings for 5 (E A D G C low action) and string height issue

Also, Fodera does make probably the best 5 String E-C set. A little more info on your bass and I can get you a good setup.

Good brand Strings for 5 (E A D G C low action) and string height issue

OK, I got your back. Bass side is low E (or B) Treble is G (or C). Also, do you know what the Radius of your fretboard is? That would help in getting you to a comfortable setup.
