    Double Bass Thoughts on carbow?

I play a carbow, I like it because it pulls a really clear, bright tone. It's one of the lightest bows I've ever used. Really good control with it too from frog to tip, it almost feels like it's longer than other bows because it has a bigger "sweet spot" I guess I'd call it. The only thing I...

Double Bass Gollihur pernambuco bows. Thoughts?

I play carbon fiber, I love my carbow! It pulls a really clear tone, and is the lightest German bass bow I've ever held. It works for anything from Schubert arrpegione sonata, bach cello suites, and even in my symphony orchestra it plays better than anyone else's in my section. My particular...

Double Bass What's your favorite music to play?

Since everyone here seems to be a jazzer, ill go down and say baroque. I love all the different contrasts. I feel like on my bass, compared to other violin family instruments, I have a wider range of heavy to light tones, warmer to brighter, loud to soft, etc. Plus that was around the time that...

Double Bass Telemann Sonata in A minor

Invalid Link Removed Not one of my favorite telemann sonatas but like a lot of them it's good for practicing technique. Back in the day telemann would mail these sonatas out to students and each one would emphasize a different technique such as string crossings, thumb position, etc. So they're...

Double Bass Steel vs Synthetic Core Sound Characteristics?

My permanent D is pretty good so I'd mostly be looking at just doing the G any way. I think it's really kind of cool to have a bright high end and warm low end for baroque stuff, it's just another way to add contrast between notes. I've heard that the G stands out from the rest of the set as...

Double Bass Steel vs Synthetic Core Sound Characteristics?

Darkest to Brightest I always thought the Pirastro strings went from: Plain Flexocore>Deluxe Flexocore>Original Flexocore/Flat Chrome>Original Flat Chrome>Permanent>Chromecore I just want a small bit more warmth which is why I was thinking the Original Flat Chromes because they should still be...

Double Bass Steel vs Synthetic Core Sound Characteristics?

Right now I'm playing a full set of permanents which I'm really quite happy with all around, but for a new piece I'm playing I kind of would like to try something just slightly warmer on top. I was thinking Original Chrome steel because I think that little bit of extra warmth would fill out the...

Double Bass Darkest string for arco known to man.

Go to d'addario's site and listen to the sound samples of the Kaplan and Zyex. Kaplans sound pretty good all over, but I think the Zyex is to warm on the bottom.

Double Bass Which kind of bow is it???

I thought these were "pit bows" shorter ends so you don't hit as many things in tight playing conditions?

Double Bass Hybrid Strings - Evah Pirazzi vs Thomastik Belcanto

I don't know anyone using belcantos for pizz, so I'm thinking you must mean the spirocores. Evah pirazzi's are really dark strings bowed or plucked. Spirocores are very bright and have a really good growl on the bottom strings. Also worth thinking about, pirazzi's have a synthetic core and so...

    Double Bass cello rosin anyone?

Nymans is a pretty hard bass rosin, it's a bit stickier, and has quite a bit more grip than a harder cello rosin. But it still doesn't sound the same as cello rosin. I would still try it before going with a normal violin/viola/cello rosin.

    Double Bass Picking a Concerto

Capuzzi's I think are really good for learning thumb position when played an octave higher. I learned the D Major Concerto mostly to help myself get used to playing more than just a few notes at a time. Played at the written pitch it's really not too difficult (I believe it was written for bass...

Double Bass Glasser Braided Carbon Fiber Bow

I've heard a lot about these bows though I've never played one myself. People really really like them and say the worst part about them is the glasser badge. I wouldn't hesitate to try one. I really think that glasser should market these bows harder and try to replace their "generic school bow"...

Double Bass Sweet spot on DB?

I too like a mellowed sound, my left hand tends to hang around a fourth and fifth above the open string. I'm not good at describing what I hear but bowing just under the end of my fingerboard tends to give a mellowed darker sound that I like for slow movements. Bowing closer to the bridge I get...

Double Bass Going on a week vacation will my bass be okay?

I do have insurance from the shop I bought it from where they'll fix damage there, but I do not like them working on it, I don't trust them. I had them change strings on it and they wouldn't let me watch, and when he brought it back out I was playing it and when I pointed out the scratch he put...
