Best effect pedal to achieve cello-like (bowed) swells?

I have a preset on the POG2 specifically to do this.

What to do when a friend asks you to join their band...

Thanks to everybody for their responses to this post. They've all been helpful and entertaining. Just a couple of things I would clarify about the person that asked me to join their band. They're NOT a beginner. They do not need 'encouragment and guidance from a more seasoned player'. But...

Audition woes - is is just me? Share the reasons you didn't get the gig

I don't really audition for bands. Either I'm involved in their inception or they find me somehow. But I did put my hand up for a friends of friends band when they started looking for a bassplayer. I really dug the band, they were really accomplished musically and I already knew and liked 2 of...

What to do when a friend asks you to join their band...

Just interested to know how others respond to the situation of being asked to join a friend's band but they're considerably below the standard of musicianship you want to play with. Either they're amateurish, substandard or their music is just plain terrible. I never want to discourage or offend...

    '64 Precision with skunk stripe

I have googled this to no avail, so a question for the vintage Fender experts. Did Fender do any Pre-Cbs Precisions with a Rosewood board but a skunk stripe? I'm out in Australia and '64 came up for sale but I'd never heard of such a thing. It certainly looked authentic in every other way and...

Who SHOULD decide how your bass sounds live?

Interesting. Most of the shows I play (and attend) are smallish club gigs. Most of the musicians are part-time players while most of the sound engineers are full time professionals. In this world I see a LOT of bass players who don't really know where there bass should sit in the mix and the...

Which players DO increase the value of a bass if they owned it?

Has anybody suggested Gene Simmons? If not, why not? As far as I'm concerned, Paul McCartney would have to lead the list. Because he's famous as a musician, famous as a songwriter, famous as a celebrity, and (somewhere down the list) famous as a bass player. Personally, I wish you could convince...

    Explain the Fender Bass VI

As far as tuning is concerned, it's a bass with two extra high strings. I've gigged with mine as a bass but if you're a dedicated bass player (as opposed to a bass player that also plays guitar like me) the feel is very different. It's a short scale, the strings are much closer together, and the...

What's the market value for this vintage P? Update: This is Jeff Andrews' main bass

Parts basses do still have value, depending on the parts. But the dates need to be verified. I'd pay a LOT more for a verified '68 neck and body than a 'maybe' '68 neck and a 'maybe' '75 body. And I personally wouldn't trust a seller who couldn't or wouldn't demonstrate these things.

Fender Truss Rod Tutorial...is this a joke?

A couple of things. If you loosen the neck whilst it's under string tension and then push against the tension, it's almost impossible to damage anything because you're pushing against the force of the strings. You just can't push it that far. Fender necks are immensely strong. How many broken...

    Heat treating a neck?

I did this on an older Teisco guitar and it worked. It got the guitar pretty cheap and it was unplayable so I decided it was worth the risk. I WAS a bit careless and scorched the binding but the neck has stayed straight and playable 5 years later.

Precision bass tuners > Grover Hipshot Schaller or.... ?

    Gotoh Res-O-Lites. They're so light!

What changed your life(bass related only please:))

For me it would be getting my Tech 21 Bass Driver DI. I'd always prefer to use an SVT or any other quality valve head. But the reality is I do lots of gigs with unpredictable backline and the bass is only being DI'd anyway. With the BDDI I'm (almost) always confident of pulling a decent stage...

Big thick necks and neck dive on P basses

I have these and a (heavy) Badass bridge. Light tuners make a huge amount of difference because you're removing the weight from the end of the neck. Res-o-lite tuners are literally half the weight of regular tuners. I was amazed how much difference they make to the feel and the balance of the bass.
