I cut strips out of a cheap mouse pad to use as pickup shims. Inexpensive and effective.

As far as the Mexican Player P basses go I have one and I like it just fine. I upgraded the pickups and bridge but the tuners that came on it are just fine. I can't see it being worth the money to replace them when they work perfectly well. Good luck, and enjoy whatever you decide on.
