I've been using only fingerstyle when playing bass, and that way I mute by using both my fretting hand (when going to a a lower string) and my right thumb (when going up). However, when I try to pick, since my right thumb isn't there to mute, I can't get it to sound good. So my question is...

How do you do slides on a fretted bass without having it sound "bumpy"? I was trying to play Dear Prudence, which has a lot them, but the slides sounded like crap. Any advice? Thanks a lot

OK thanks a lot, I fixed the problem by lowering the pickups and plucking in a different way, in case anybody is interested.

The bass I'm using is a Washburn WB44, which has two pickups, a P-bass type near the neck and a single coil in the bridge. The noise is certainly not fret noise, I'm sure of that. If I lower the pickups, will that affect the sound? Like less volume, different tone, or something like that...
