slides on a fretted bass

How do you do slides on a fretted bass without having it sound "bumpy"? I was trying to play Dear Prudence, which has a lot them, but the slides sounded like crap. Any advice?

It's somewhat tricky to make slides sound very smooth, even with flats. Practice makes perfect.
