What are your favorite “jAzZ bAsS oN StErOiDs” pickups?

DiMarzio Ultra-Jazz. A split-coil humbucking Jazz pickup for well under $100. Problem solver. There's no excuse for pickups that hum/buzz 80+ years into the electric instrument era.

Bob Daisley! One of the most underappreciated people in the rock biz.

    First successful build…

Just voted "No" on the pickguard, and read all the replies that agreed with my reasons. Then I saw how it turned out, and think it looks great!

Poll: P Bass pickup covers - Black or Cream?

I voted for black pickups. To really set it off, go with matte black knobs. On a couple of my basses I went with the idea that string management parts already match each other--bridge and tuners are both chrome, black, or gold, etc. Why shouldn't electronics parts match each other as well...

    First successful build…

I like it! Are the pickups placed at ThunderBird locations?

    NBD- ‘85 Peavey Patriot

I've got a crush on that Patriot. Of all the woods in the world, she had to be mahogany. I've always liked Peavey's headstock design. The Patriot has been on my pawnshop BOLO list for a long time, but never seem to find them.

Anyone else have this sorta conversation with their partner?

Exactly like conversations with my ex. In my defense, this one bandleader would send out texts that lacked nearly every important detail and when I would ask 4 follow-ups he would maybe answer two if I was lucky. (Sometimes it helps to know it you're playing outdoors in August in Texas...)...

Did any of you guys Gig for money while going to University?

I played probably 5 bar gigs a month while in college. As I remember, the $$ was about the same per player per night as it is now, which is just wrong. Quit school, stayed in the music business for over 40 years, do not recommend.

    4 vs 5 String

I prefer BEAD when going for lower notes. Comfort is part of it, and I really don't like to get too far into guitar territory anyway, so the lack of a G string means little to me.

Aftermarket 5 Knob Sets For Active EQ Basses

Dirk, I have DIY knobs as well as pickguards, control cavity plates, trussrod covers, etc. It's always fun to fire up the drill press, sanders, Dremel, jeweler's saw, whatever is needed. I'm just surprised that such a popular control configuration is completely ignored, for everyone else's...

Aftermarket 5 Knob Sets For Active EQ Basses

There aren't any. For example, the very popular Ibanez SR series that have been around for decades. They have volume and blend controls using normal size knobs, and a 3-band EQ with smaller versions because those controls are closer together. The 2 large+3 small arrangement has been used...

    Symptoms of Failing Capacitors?

Maybe you have a crusty input gain pot that needs DeOxit from having sat in the same small range for years? That would be a best-case scenario.

    Ibanez SRA550 / SRA555

I'm sure they tried to voice them as close as possible. Speaking of using the same brand pf pickup and preamp like your Bartolinis: My Korean Ibanez Iceman 200 came with guitar pickups (Gibson Firebird copies) and unplugged it was already extremely twangy. I finally routed it out to fit a...

    Ibanez SRA550 / SRA555

I find the "Affordable" meaning of the A to be funny yet suspect. Big corporations wouldn't do that, would they? Have come across many people online who dislike the EMG35HZ, and I don't wonder why. Passive pickups aren't exactly their specialty. They seem to me to have been a low cost thing...
