as suggested, pick play, high mids, bit of gain. if your not going to pick play try out a sansamp in a shop on your setup, that might get close without using a pick.

its not good to overpower a cab, should just blow the cab rather than damage the head. theres a real good article as a sticky in amps, which is called overpowering and underpowering

That looks like a GK 800rb - VERY good GK head - its the one that defined the GK sound. you could try get one of those second hand, they sound badass!

when i flick between my amp handles it fine and i would recommend it for switching between lead and groove parts. as previously suggested - if your not hearing a pop and there isnt a separate input - i wouldnt worry about it.
