Best Alternative bassist from the last 25 years

So, 1989 to 2014...hmmm, let's see. Duff McKagan (GnR), Simon Gallup (The Cure), Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam), Mick Quinn (Supergrass), Royston Langdon (Spacehog), and let's not forget Flea, technically he's probably the best bass player in alternative rock music for over 30 years. I'd have def said...

Flats + Precision Bass= supposed to be heavenly but I just can't get into them...

I had a bad tonal experience with Roto 77 flats on my P-bass years ago. Roto flats on a Pbass should give it that Roger Waters 70's sound right...well it should..but not if you have a super hot hi-fi modern sounding SD Quarter Pounder in it. That pickup and RS77's did not get along well for me...

    5 string with two E's?

As much as I think it's cool you experimented, I'll say this - if your not using the Low B much why not try a 5 string E-A-D-G-C tuning instead? Like the classic Fender Bass V had. You might like it!! Two Low E's prob will get old real quick bro!! And tuning a 120 and higher string to E will...

New from La Bella: Low Tension Flexible Flat Series Bass Strings

Nice, thanks for that full description man. I've been drooling over TI's for so damn long for my RIC it hurts, but just haven't been able to afford it. I will rock a set of flats for years and years, so I defiantly just wanted to make sure that they were the definite ones to go with over the...

New from La Bella: Low Tension Flexible Flat Series Bass Strings

I hear ya, I'm sure they don't. :) But as far as the brighter, clearer tone most people say TI's have my question is what kind of most high end do they have as opposed to the brightness of Chromes? I currently use Labella 760FL's on my P-Bass, and have Chromes on my RIC, the Rickenbacker 4003...

New from La Bella: Low Tension Flexible Flat Series Bass Strings

Is the high end on the TI's a different kind of high end as opposed to the high end of Chromes? Not a fan of Chromes...and I say that by using them for LONG periods of time, not just throwing a set on and saying they are "too bright". ;)

New from La Bella: Low Tension Flexible Flat Series Bass Strings

Here's a question for anyone that may has tried the new Labella Low Tension Flats and Thomastik Infeld flats, and on a RIC...? What is the sound and feel difference between the 2 sets? What does the silk under wrap and Nickel ribbon on the TI's sound like vs. the no silk under wrap and SS...

    TapeWound Club~Anyone?

I've had a the same set of Rotosound RS88M Tru Bass strings on my Viola bass since 2005. In expensive bass, and w/ the tapewound hard as heck to intonate, but w/ these strings it's ironically still my best sounding bass low end and uniqueness wise.

    Yes! Fender 9050 flats!

You guys ever try oiling them? Or using a handcream...grease? Loose the clankiness quicker, and make the "funk" come on faster...adds to the thump quicker. Try Organic coconut oil! Smells great too! :)

New from La Bella: Low Tension Flexible Flat Series Bass Strings

Yes, I am aware. Mustangs are thru body so the string length has to compensated for. LaBella is the only Mustang specific company that makes Mustang bass sets. Searched them out years ago. They are doin it right! Gauge and length. Props to them!

    A new documentary thread

A great doc is Thunder Soul: (The True Story of Conrad Johnson & The Kashmere Stage Band) ...if you haven't seen ii or heard about it, trust me, it's worth the watch. Surprisingly it's one of the best docs I've ever seen, and I've seen everything! It's actually on Netflix instant still, here's a...

What's one type of band you always wanted to play in but never have?

My dream would have been to be one of The Funk Brothers. To be able to be a part of that brotherhood, that family, share those times in the studio together, as a unit, as a team, and be able able to work a job to feed myself using the talents God gave me to help others sound good and enjoy...

Bands that have two bass players

That's my brother in law Rick Frank's band, Elephants Memory, they had 2 bass players at times in their existence. The bass players at the MSG show were their's, Gary Van Scyoc and John Ward. Elephant's Memory were backing John in 72, and on the "Sometime In New York City" record, tv appearances...

    Rotosound 66s, annoying sound

Yeah man, Swing Bass 66's are the epitome of the rock bass string sound. The string sound from all walks of historical rock! From John Entwistle (that helped develop them for us in the 60's) to John Paul Jones, to Geddy Lee, to Duff McKagan on every GnR record, to Krist Noveselic on Nevermind...
