I agree. Fenders are hard to take at first, as with alot of flats.
But after that first month very much hit their stride.

Wow....I'm surprised this thread I started is still alive.
I still have the 9050's that I first installed on my P bass and they've mellowed in a nice way. Not dead by any means but not zingy by any means. Fact is, I used that bass at a gig the other night. Played two sets with a guitar player and a drummer and I loved the sound I got thru my GK MB115. I really love the feel of these strings and the tension is perfect for me. Offhand I really don't see these strings coming off of this bass.

i installed these on my fury p-bass. the E string seemed a hollow compared to the other strings, which were full and fantastic sounding. I emailed fender about it and they agreed I probably got a bum E string, and they are doing me right and then some. great customer service from a massive company. i expected no response, but got much more. even with the less than stellar E, this set is amazing.
My ML set is just starting to hit its sweet spot after a few weeks.
I still wish they sold singles as i would love a 50/70/85/105 set.

My gf has an original set of Fender Mastersound flatwounds that are original from her Mustang from 1969.
They feel unlike any modern day Fender flatwound. Very rubbery! She loved them!
She took them off a few years ago as they were getting really hard to keep in tune being over 40 years old and all, but man what a sound!!

Last time I strung my fretless with a 9050SL.
Honestly I expected´em worse. At first weeks didn´t liked too much. I came to take off my old Chromes so I found some differences in sense of touch,tone, and tension. But after 3 weeks I started enjoying their tone, and my fingers was confortable for this new tension.
I must say that I found Chromes mellower than Fender too, but for the money this Fender really works for me.
So I had a good surprise with this Fender Flats. They are enough good for tight budgets.

I like the current Fender flats. Finally got a set for a P bass....pretty darn good. I think I've tried most of the available flats except Pyramids. The Fenders rate pretty good for my tastes. My faves are vintage Dean Markley flats (virtually unobtainable), but these Fenders are nice. Thumbs up.
Also, I recently splurged for a NOS set of Fender flats, like the ones from the 70's (I think). Haven't installed them yet, but expectations are high.

For years and years I've been obsessed with Paul McCartney's Live Wings Over America/Rockshow 1975-76 era tone.
And in this pic it looks pretty evident that the strings on his RIC had those super obvious Fender silk ends that were jade/teal/green silk ends.
(Not Pyramid green, that's more olive.) These look like the old Fender Mastersound flats w/ the green ends. (ZOOM in)

Does that gauge chart say 1.04 inches for the E-string? That's either an unfortunate typo or it's literally a bridge cable!
I just got a new set of 9050M strings. They seem to sound not just bright, but have a sort of metallic clanking sound. I do not remember this with Chromes, but admittedly it has been a while since I last put a new set of Chromes on anything.
Does this clanking sound eventually subside on the Fenders?

For me, the clankiest edge of them wore down after only five days. Whenever I use Chromes, it takes close to a month for the clank to completely wear down.
OK, so you play faster than me
My trick is to deliberately play hard. Sometimes I'll even just snap them repeatedly (without actually playing anything) to break them in faster. I also wipe off the graphite polish before putting them on.
You guys ever try oiling them? Or using a handcream...grease? Loose the clankiness quicker, and make the "funk" come on faster...adds to the thump quicker. Try Organic coconut oil! Smells great too!
