This record has become a HUGE well-loved global hit in my view, largely due to John's inventive, bouncy and catchy bassline; well, Van's contribution also helped :) I'd love to know how much was written - but John sure nailed it and sounded like he had a ball doing it.

I agree - the neck on my '64 Hofner 500/1 is v.slim and takes some getting used to - as does the incredible (lack of) weight. If you got big hands you might struggle and the short scale and upper-register access might be somewhat limiting. However it can be a real joy to play jazzy lines ....

These days it might not make my first-call for a gigging axe - but my all-orig, tobacco-burst, '63 Fender P-bass is hard to beat. pics soon ...

It may not be my gigging axe of choice but I love my all-original blonde '64 Hofner 500/1 - and with new flatwounds sounds superbly McCartney-esque.
