The mass of the tuners doesn’t seem like much or even much difference between standard and lightweight tuners but they’re out at the end of a long lever so a small weight difference makes a big difference in feel.

Those look like you’d probably notice them while playing even if they don’t affect playability, and they could. I’d also agree they look like wood filler and not veneer. I’d scrape and / or saw them out and install actual veneer.

I think the head style you want is Fillister.
