P-Bass love - is it more of a boomer thing?

I generally agree with this. I have long thought that a good bass sound is a good bass sound. But I was shown that while this true for the most part in a live situation, to engineers in a session, it is not. this is a double edged sword. I've seen amazing engineers that can mix a Fodera with a...

P-Bass love - is it more of a boomer thing?

This is a strange question. It’s not about age, but what kind of music you play. I know a lot of guys in their 20s that play only P and J basses exclusively. Because they play R&B and Jazz. I would find it bizarre to see a guy in Periphery or some neo prog metal band playing a P Bass. But I...

(belated)NBD - Music Man Joe Dart Sterling

It’s whatever you like. I have a friend that put the pickguard in his custom shop Jaco. People were like “what?!”. Who cares. I love the way you describe the tone. I may have to try one the next time I see one. I see that you can still get them on the Ernie Ball website for $2499 direct. Maybe I...

    Round wounds vs flat wounds

I felt the same until I tried the LaBella Low Tension Flats. Now I can imagine my P Bass without them. So weird because I never liked flats before that. Except listening to other people play them (Pino Palladino, etc.)

Not all Fender, but I have a American Performer Mustang with Nordstrand Pickups, a Mod Shop P bass with Aguilar 60’s P, and a Mod Shop J with Howard Ulyate J pickups. The P and the J also have Obsidian wiring harnesses and have roasted necks . All three are plek’d. I don’t have money anymore for...

    NBD - GC Score

I think Pino on the D’Angelo records single-handedly created a whole new generation of P-Bass players, of which I too am one!

Why do so many players love flats?

Depends on the bass. If it’s a Jazz, rounds all the way. However as I got older, I bought my first P Bass. I can’t imagine that bass without the LaBella Low Tension Flats on it. It just has that sound, the tone. If it’s a modern bass, I think flats would be silly. I have to clarify by saying I...
