It all comes down to personal preference. I have never liked flat/tape/ribbon wound for 2 reasons for me.
#1) The tone isn't there. It's extremely limited and I can easily duplicate the tone of flats from any other strings.
#2) Higher tensioned strings means harder on the fingers to play over long periods of time. regular 4 hour (4-50 minute) sets are hard enough, I don't need the extra strain on my fingers and wrists. even on fretless.
That's it for me. I have nothing negative to say about people who like them, I just don't.
Tony Franklin, "The Fretless Monster", only tried flats recently and hated them. That's the way I feel as well. I've also been playing since the 70s, just don't like the strings, they way they feel and sound to me.
