I need a new bass, good for slap

+1 on the Carvin SB advice. I prefer a Jazz for slap, and there are numerous other great basses mentioned that are good at most everything, but an SB does a monsterous slap attack under proper hands that sounds very different from a Jazz.

Jazz bass owners, where is your plucking 'sweet spot'?

I play my Jazz with float thumb and my palm heel rests naturally wrist pretty straight so that fingers fall between pups - maybe a shade closer to neck. But because I play finger-style only, I slide my thumb over the strings that I'm not noting so they won't ring. Can't hear ringing strings...

    Recommend a Markbass cab

Best portable (1 person) ext for 102 combo=T102. Better lows, adjustable/defeatable horn and still 1-person (& still two trips)=102HF Top of the heap but more to move=104HF. Detachable rollers help for some trips, but it's a 2-person lift cab even though it's a relatively light 4X10. For most...

    What's your B like?

Thanks! I use DR Sunbeams on my FAmJazz'75reissue and like them a lot, so I feel good about your recommendation and will try their Lo-Riders on my Schecter C5.

    Opinions on Markbass Combos

I have a 102P. It's versatile in that I can get the tones for rock, blues, country, jazz by using the filters. It has plenty of presence for most places I play, and running through a P.A. it's a perfect stage monitor for me. The 10s give it a middy strength but the low end is usually enough for...

How much power is REALLY needed on stage?

That's correct. That extra 3db you would get by doubling power would only gain extra headroom you probably don't need if you already have 500 clean w. Moving more air with more speakers with adequate power IS the key. The small gig rig with enough amp to add another cab is the avg. answer for...

How much power is REALLY needed on stage?

My thoughts about adding more drivers doesn't result in a linear equation of "loudness". An 4X10 4ohm cab rated at 1000w but driven by a head outputting 500w at 4ohms is good and loud. By to make it even louder you have to double its input. You can buy an very expensive new amp or bridge the...

How much power is REALLY needed on stage?

One thing to keep it mind is that adding more drivers (cab)to a head so that it sees 4ohm (if that's what your head will do) and can achieve max output delivers a better result than say going from a 300 RMS input to a 500 using the same cab even if that's still within its RMS rating. To get...

    Dead Spots?????

IMO, most basses have a string/fret that has less tonal color and sustain. The offending string/position always sounds worse by comparison, as most of the time they only result in a diminished, not dead response. Often it's G and that is the easiest string to live with. It's only a problem -- on...
