What's up Christian? I always recommend people learn music theory when picking up any instrument, but it's not 100% necessary if you aren't into improv or sight reading. As long as you practice hard and know what you need to know, then you'll probably be alright.

I tried to get something like this going at my work as well, but apparently because of cultural issues in the workplace we're not allowed to do it anymore. I guess someone felt ostracized over not being able to participate in a similar endeavor a few years ago.
