    TB11 Preamp Project

Hi all, I still pop in here occasionally. I went down the rabbit hole with microphone designs over at GroupDIY so I've had precious little time to spend on bass and/or bass preamps. I can help out as time permits: remembering back a few years ago I had half a dozen preamp boards made...

My SX (Essex) Fretless Jazz Rebuild

Thanks! I've been through three sets of SS round-wounds: some scuffing can be seen but it doesn't bother me enough to fix it. I imagine some lemon oil and 0000 steel wool would polish it up pretty quickly.

    Fretless setup troubles

Perhaps the nut slot is cut too low?

    TB11 Preamp Project

In case anyone is interested, here was the fixed layout I came up with some time ago. I haven't had any space on my last few panels but if someone is interested I can see if I can have a few made and send them out. Keep in mind: I think this should work properly but I haven't built/tested...

    TB11 Preamp Project

Nobody ever built these because I had the only two prototypes. :smug: I found three layout errors on the first boards: the last of which was not fixable as it was an incorrect connection of a pin to a ground plane. There no way to dremel it up to fix it. Hence the first boards only worked...

My SX (Essex) Fretless Jazz Rebuild

To finish things up: 1) Attached the bridge with #6 stainless steel screws: 2) Screwed in the Dimarzio Area J set: 3) Wired up the pots, output jack, and DPDT switch for series/parallel switching (the pickups are hard wired in series, and the neck volume pot pulls up and down...

My SX (Essex) Fretless Jazz Rebuild

Ugh, after a long delay of work and house projects I finally get to spend time on stuff that really matters...bass building. Here's the process I went through to get the epoxy finish on the neck (I don't have any in-process pics since I had to work fast): 1) I used Envirotex Lite, mixed in...

    I can't get a good sound direct!

What about the sound did you feel lacking? I find it depends mainly on the style of music. I've done tons of Jazz recordings direct that blended well, as the sound was mostly clean with a clear fundamental (and was relatively low in the mix). However for aggressive rock sounds I've always...

    Epoxy on Rosewood Fretboard

This. The epoxy goes down in 10 minutes, but it's a week of work leveling it.

    Epoxy on Rosewood Fretboard

Envirotex seems to be HIGHLY temperature dependent. At 50F, it took over 24 hours to set to tacky, and over a week to cure to full hardness. At 70F it was supposed to be better but I had to do this in my garage. Of course all epoxies suffer from this problem, but Envirotex appears to be...

    Epoxy on Rosewood Fretboard

I just finished an epoxy job on a fretless J. I used Envirotex Lite. If I had to do it again I would use the West Systems 105/207 combination, as the Envirotex was hard to measure correctly (I like to measure by weight: West Systems publishes the weight ratio's) and takes a VERY long time to cure.

    Replacing pickups in my essex...

This is the "SX effect" and is well documented here on TB. If you like the aggressive mid-forward tone of the SX pickups, Chunger has come up with a good Nordstrand recipe in his "basses for newbies (SX batch build thread)" in Hardware, Setup & Repair...there's sound samples you can hear in...

Count me in on the Super Ferrites

I think if you dig a hard-core vintage tone these work fine. My '86 maple and rosewood Foundation I find far two dark and lifeless with the Super Ferrites. I can't get the tone to cut through a mix no matter how I play it. The bass itself is superb however.
