I was a major fan of D'Addario XL Reds Super Soft. Bright and punchy yet able to project warmth with a little finger adjustment. They don't make them anymore (dammit!) so I've settled for regular XL long scale.

I'm a fan of both. It depends on the gig. If I'm doing a rock gig in a cavern of a club or an outdoor fest give me that megawatt wall of 810's and 215's. If I'm doing a blues or fusion gig a tight and compact 100watts is the way. There's always the XLR out to the PA, if you really need to stop...

Lately I've been interested in a brand called Galveston that has a five-string fretted/four-string fretless double-necked model. I've talked to two guys who have their four-string fretless and they swear by it. Link Removed

I played a lined MV Pedulla Buzz fretless for a several months. One of the best feeling necks and the most awesome tone I've ever wrapped my mitts around. Unfortunately I had to sell it in order to replace a blown amp in the middle of a road tour. I HATED to let that puppy go!

What kind of rig are you running thru? Maybe you can get the tone effect you want without resorting to stomp boxes.
