    bass help needed

I started off well below what you're currently playing BUT what got my playing on par was the fact that I only had three strings to work with. I borrowed a friends Sears-Silvertone J-bass knockoff and it only had the E, A & D strings. I played it exactly like that for over a year with a little...

    envelope addicted

Being a diehard Funkadelic/Bootsy fan, I went out and bought one of the original Musitronics Mutron III's (when you could still find them). Took me forever playing with the switches and knobs to get that right 'wha-oop" sound but when I did..! OMG! I had that thing for years ('82-'01) before my...

    Happy Birthday Chris Squire

Chris Squire was a major influence (along with Nick St. Nicholas/Steppenwolf and Cordell "Boogie" Mosson/Funkadelic) - that gave me the hankerin' for that stereo Rick sound. I didn't realize Chris played with a pick until I saw YES in concert in the mid '80's. (All the photos I ever saw just had...

Looking for a set of strings...help?

I was a major fan of D'Addario XL Reds Super Soft. Bright and punchy yet able to project warmth with a little finger adjustment. They don't make them anymore (dammit!) so I've settled for regular XL long scale.

2 Types of bassists it seems....

I'm a fan of both. It depends on the gig. If I'm doing a rock gig in a cavern of a club or an outdoor fest give me that megawatt wall of 810's and 215's. If I'm doing a blues or fusion gig a tight and compact 100watts is the way. There's always the XLR out to the PA, if you really need to stop...

    Which deity is your bass?

My Ric was "The Fish", my P is simply named Hensley.

    Is it a P or a J? (continuation)

but.. it sounds pretty dry. My P has a distinctive roundness to the open strings. And my J had a plushness that this recording is missing.

Can I Hear From The Fretless Players? Let's Talk Fretless Bass!

Lately I've been interested in a brand called Galveston that has a five-string fretted/four-string fretless double-necked model. I've talked to two guys who have their four-string fretless and they swear by it. Link Removed

Can I Hear From The Fretless Players? Let's Talk Fretless Bass!

I played a lined MV Pedulla Buzz fretless for a several months. One of the best feeling necks and the most awesome tone I've ever wrapped my mitts around. Unfortunately I had to sell it in order to replace a blown amp in the middle of a road tour. I HATED to let that puppy go!

The best fuzz pedal for bass...

What kind of rig are you running thru? Maybe you can get the tone effect you want without resorting to stomp boxes.

    Be on the lookout

For a '77 Mapleglo Rickerbacker 4001 and case - stolen in Talladega, Alabama in 1979 - last seen in the hands of a worker for a moving company contracted by the US Army. Case contained a microphone and had a custom sticker on it that said "Electronic Funk Specialist" '76 Fender Jazz bass...

Lost & Stolen Gear Stories: How did you get the gear back? Advice for the rest of us?

I agree with Arrrrgh. I was playing a battle of the bands gig with a new group and the band equipment staging area was right next to the load-in/out exit. That should have raised a red flag right there. We played our set and put our gear in line to load out. After the next bands' set we went to...
