envelope addicted

Oh dude I love it, I'm blown away by it!

My list:
Barge Grinder
Chunk 00funk
Subdecay Prometheus
Guyatone BR2
Pigtronix EP-2
EHX Enigma
EHX BMS
EHX Qtron+
Wilson Bass wah

Best effect EVER.

Awesome! Have you tried an expression pedal on the EF sweep yet.. I got a Moog exp. pedal and I find the sweep to be quite usefull.

I am really liking the blend feature of the phase and envelope

Honestly though, Im not digging the staccato switch as much as I thought I would. Maybe I'm using it in the wrong settings.

I think I've found myself in the same boat:

EHX Q-tron+ XO (for sale)
EHX Bass Micro Synth (if that really counts)
Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk (this thing...)
3Leaf Audio Groove Regulator (I call it home :))
*Secret* (it's a secret)

And I really want to get my hands on the new MXR Bass Envelope Filter. That's about it though I can't see myself wanting any more than that but I feel like I have too many as it is, lol.

I've said this before, but if money and board space weren't an issue I'd have a bunch of different filters.

Original MuTron for classic finger funk.
Chunk 00Funk for synthy combos and modern filter sounds
DOD FX25 (in a blend loop) for slap funk (and dub)
DiscumBOBulator or Groove Regulator for more subtle sounds
Original Robotalk (or maybe Prometheus) for S&H or step filtering
Bottom Feeder for more spacey sounds

etc.

The tough part for me is that I like band pass filter sounds a lot but (1) they can get thin in the mix and (2) instead of synth sounds with fuzz you (understandably) get more of a "fuzz into wah" sound.

The first point can be helped with a blend pedal or with the dry function of something like the Robotalk 2 or the new MXR bass filter.

Ideally I'd like a filter with a switch for LP & BP modes. The Maxon AF-9 was almost it and a Meatball or MS-20 clone (Grinder, Meatwad, Photron) might be the ticket but for now I'm just using the 00Funk for all my filter needs. Maybe I'll put the new MXR next to it. We'll see.

I have had MANY, and still have many, but ones I WON'T part with are my original Musitronics Mutron III and the Barge Concepts Grinder.
Also have and love the MXR Bass AutoQ and original Q-Tron.

Hey Cliff, glad you like the EP-2!! Drastic improvement over the EP-1 for sure!

After having up to 7 at one time I settled on the AF9 until a few months ago. That's when I got my Robot Factory Photron (sounds great with the Robot Factory Pulse Synth). Now I think my filter jonesin' is jonesin' again.

Moog LPF
EP1
BMS
XO Qtron+
AF9
BSW
XO Bassballs
and
Morley DBW

I would love to get rid of the AF9 - there is a volume boost that I really need a compressor to deal with, the switch pops sometimes...but it absolutely *nails* one of the sounds that I want to get. So it stays. I can get kinda close with the Mail Bomb but it just isn't the same...

Being a diehard Funkadelic/Bootsy fan, I went out and bought one of the original Musitronics Mutron III's (when you could still find them). Took me forever playing with the switches and knobs to get that right 'wha-oop" sound but when I did..! OMG! I had that thing for years ('82-'01) before my roadie "misplaced" it after a gig. Many times I wouldn't even use it because my MXR Phase90 was better suited for the gig. But I'd set it up anyway and HOPE for any opportunity to unleash it's power.

I never quite got the EP-1 to behave right with my active basses (EMG pickups). The phaser sounded great and the envelope phaser sounded great on my passive bass but I just couldn't quite get it to behave as a filter.

Now, the FX25 has been part of my sound for years and I've had zero trouble with an unlined Fender precision fretless with EMGs. Lots of interesting tones--I do the "Lasswell" sound a lot and also use it for my auto-wah needs (also works nicely with a distortion pedal in front of it for extra growl). And in February I picked up a Moog MF-101 which is simply the most amazing non-distortion pedal (don't get me started) I own now. I am absolutely in love with it for the range of sounds it can produce. I was to make a whole record where I run everything through it--guitar, bass, drums, keys, voice.

Best effect EVER.

I would love to be able to sample all of these pedals to find which one(s) would fit best with my sound and technique. I first got a Boss Dynamic Wah, but I felt that it took all the balls out of my rig and sounded thin, disappeared into the mix anytime I turned it on. After some additional, and admittedly limited, searching I settled in on an EHX Enigma.
The Enigma has plenty of settings to play with, and it gets the genuinely "wet" sound that I wanted in a Env Filter. I can adjust it a good bit, but I can never seem to get that smooth feel from it. I can adjust the Attack and Decay, the sensitivity and the blend, but it always ends up losing the subtle muffled "quack" that I am, at times, looking for.
It's got a neat analog distortion that can take on a Moog-like effect. I also use it with an expression pedal as a rocker, which proves to be useful at times, but I get frustrated with this pedals hyper-like quality. I guess I should continue to play with it, maybe mix up the blend and try using a pick to get a more consistent result.

Would anyone suggest another take on this? I can get a list of filters anywhere, and I know that "to each his own", but I would like to here WHY you would prefer one over another. I don't have access to many of these pedals. What qualities to each have that are desireable? Anything I should steer clear of?

Yeah I've had the same experience with my enigma, its got a killer ultra wet and squishy/ splhatty sound that I have come to LOVE but I haven't gotten any smooth quacks from it. I could do more experimenting though.

To update my list:
Barge Grinder
Chunk 00funk
Subdecay Prometheus
Guyatone BR2
Pigtronix EP-2
Pigtronix EP-1
EHX Enigma
EHX BMS
EHX Qtron+
Wilson Bass wah
WMD Superfatman (ordered)

Once again: Best effect EVER.

I had to get another EP-1 as the EP-2's envelope is SO different to my ears. I'm getting an Apogee One very soon and might try and record some clips of my filters.

I'd be interested to hear some of those samples Cliff, if ya pull them together let me know.

As I understand the Groove Regulator has a smooth finish to it.

Chunk Systems has been promoted by Bootsy if i am correct. That's something I thought about too, but just because his name is associated with it doesn't mean squat without getting an earful of it.

Do you have any opinions or experience with the ever elusive/expensive Meatball?

My ears concur with yours. Kinda have sellers remorse over the EP-1 at times, but I had to sell it to fund the EP-2.

I love the phaser on the Ep-2 sooo much more as well as the compact size and the blend feature. etc. etc.

No I've never played an OG meatball, but I love my grinder to death. The groove regulator is also based on the meatball and gets a lot of love, I haven't had a chance to play one.
