Anyone used catalpa when building a bass? Good tone? My grandfather is having one cut down in his backyard and I'd like to use it for a body if its good wood. Heck maybe a neck too.

Go ahead and drill the holes. I've done it both ways and its much easier to drill ahead of time. Even if the holes get filled, the screws will pull it all back out when you put them in

Tough spot to be in. I'm not sure what advice I can offer, but I feel your pain. I even had my keyboardist cancel for a gig the day before. If there's a drummer and another guitarist available, move on. If not, at least you're off the ground and playing, even if they are flaky
