Your first bass vs. what you play now

My first bass is still my main bass, 45+ years later. 1959 Precision bass, maple neck. Bought it for $50 in 1967. Has been refinished three times, refretted twice, one bad pot and cap replaced. Still blows away everything else I've owned since.

My first bass was a Hondo P bass copy back in 1982. First replaced pickups, then the bridge, added a J bass pickup, pulled the frets and destroyed the neck, replaced with a Kubicki J bass neck. Later a friend tried it and liked the sound, took it to a gig and never returned it. Learned a hard lesson about human nature. Today it's Lakland, Fbass, and Fodera. None of them even remotely like a P bass but much more versatile.

My first bass was a late 90s Ibanez SR800 (I think... those are hard to identify) that I got used via eBay.

Since then I've been through a Warwick Corvette 5, then a MusicMan Sub 4, and I just landed a MMRay5. I think I finally found my home.

Very subtle differences between these two. :smug:

My first was a Guild M85, given to me by one of my friends. At least I'm 99% sure that was the first. I also had an Ibanez SR of some sort right around the same time, also given to me by a friend. Each was sold to fund more music gear,

Hmmm. I had some cool friends!

Anyways, now I play a whole heap of stuff but I wouldn't hesitate to rock either one of the "1st" basses at any time.

I still play my first.... Kinda... It's a squier affinity p bass. Cherry red, practice amp came with it. I say kinda because I've totally remodeled it. Almost completely really. The only original part is the body. New neck, tuners, pots, p/us, everything. I've thought about going and getting a nice new body for it, but I just can't bear to ditch it

My first - a Sekova copy of a Gibson SG/EB-3. The reason for my selection is the fact that I was able to buy it at a flea market for $50, which was all the cash I had on me when I was 14, so it was all I could afford in that context.

The Sekova had a terrible bridge, awful neck, poor action, but actually sounded pretty decent. As soon as I could, I sold it and bought real P-Bass.

Fortunately, things are different now, and I can buy whatever I can justify (and sneak in the door). Still, I try to play what I like without going crazy. So, having said that...

Current (main) bass... Fender Roscoe Beck V. Nice build quality, very solid, nice to play, and the SOUND!!!

I bought the RB because I happened to find it on CL at a stupid cheap price(seller was strapped for cash and had it priced at less than half the "going rate"). My intent was to flip it to someone, making them a great deal and a few bucks for me.

Once it arrived at the door, I plugged it in, and immediately knew I was in trouble. The RB does an "older than old-school" Jazz sound that just makes you say YESSSSSS! In addition, you can get a reasonable(but not 100%) P-Bass sound and it will even get you a more modern "MM" voice if you like. Prior to the RB, I was a 100% confirmed G&L guy(and I still love G&L), but I like the RB so much that I put my L-2500 up for sale, and I don't really miss it.

I also like that the RB is 100% passive, the way God intended. ;)

First bass was a Framus Stratostar from 64. Hated it. Big fat neck with tiny fingerboard, guitar tuners that broke immediately after I got it, and horribly trashy sound. Wish I still had it ;)

Today's main bass is an 09 Fender AmStd Precision with 62 Original pickup and Stellartone Tonestyler. Much better!

Are those those 62' reissue or what not?

Or original originals? I've been thinking of replacing the EMG's I have in my P and I considered these. Then I looked into delano. I'm kind of torn.

My first was a fire engine red "Burnside by Guild." It is a plywood-body PJ. It's been defretted and I gave it to my sister 14 years ago. She's still got it. I snuck into her room and noodled around with it a month ago.

Current basses are both Squiers, one a P and the other a TB. The Burnside set the stage for the P-bass neck. I learned on that and have since returned to that width.

Believe it or not - Sears. Yep! A Sears bass. $20. Rewired it and gave it a nice spray-bomb paint-job. Circa early 1970s.

Sears basses were early Danelectro, were they not? I've seen a few recently and I've been tempted to pick one up just for vintage value :D
