Your first bass vs. what you play now

I began with a Samick, can't remember the name of the model, but it looked like a P Bass, black body, three ply BKB pickguard, and a pointy headstock I didn't like very much.

Now I own the bass that Samick partly paid for (neck at the repair shop because the truss rod is damaged, it looks like it's going to be a difficult fix), an Ibanez SR375M, a Strinberg Sixer in trans red (body looks like a Bass Collection Nanio bass) and a P Bass Copy I posted a thread about yesterday. I also have in my home country (hoping to have it delivered in december) a fiver no brand fretless that needs some tinkering to be finished (I defretted it myself). I don't have expensive basses, but mine serve me well and are very well built.

Started with an SX p bass. I don't think it has influenced any of my decisions on what to buy. I'm now playing a Lecompte Jazz. I'll never sell my SX though.

2005 - 2007 My first bass, was set up well, didn't care for the sound though: Chinese $100 copy of Ibanez SR-600 - bolt-on, basswod body, 4 strings, passive (PJ pickups);
2007 - 2012 Really nice one, sounded like a decent $500 japanese fender replica: Chinese $350 J&D-S5B (STBR) - neck through, alder body, 5 strings, passive (J pickups looking like humbuckers);
2013 - present: 2012 Fender American Standard Jazz Bass.

Washburn T-14 > Epiphone Thunderird > Fender Highway One P Bass > 1985 Peavey Foundation > 1974 Univox Hi-Flier.

I only still have the Fender and the Uni but honestly, the Washburn wasn't a bad little bass.

I started out on a Marcus Miller 4 string, and got myself a Music Man Stingray 5 HH a year later (2007 model I believe, so I guess it sounds like the Sterling 5 HH's). The latter is now my main bass, although I still have the Miller as well.

My first bass was an Ibanez Gsr180 which was a surprisingly good instrument for the money, next a ~02-03 Fender Mim P-bass which I hated, then an Ibanez SR505, traded it for a 2012 Fender MIM Standard Jazz, sold that and now I play a custom Manne Trea Satin Special 5 which absolutely rocks.

My first bass was a squier P. I modded it by putting active EMG's in it and a BAII bridge on it. I've since taken off the BAII and put a threaded vintage fender bridge on it. I still use it often at home, not much at practice and never live. Yet. I plan to replace the EMG's. I've had an SGR before but it's in pieces on my wall now. I am now using an ibanez ATK 300 as my main bass. I love that bass. I haven't bought that many basses. I plan to grab a roger waters P bass sig eventually possibly too.

Yamaha blue p bass copy with goofy body top and bottom horns. Entry level. I hated the brand. second bass was also a Yamaha green with gold hardware and two active soap bars. Hated it. Now I've got a road worn P And a Lakland dj4 jazz.

My very first bass is long gone.. I don't even remember the name but it was not a name .. or even an off name brand.. I got it for $50 used and it was indeed a $50 bass.. I wound up ruining it when I tried to replace the neck ... I had no idea what I was doing. The other neck was a bit longer and it never played right after that. My first real bass was a 77 Jazz .. which I still own and will probably never part with. I currently go between my Jazz 24V and a KZ5 I just got.

My first was a Univox factory second rebranded as a Maestro, looked like this:

Except mine still had the pickguard, It was a nice little bass, easy to play, and I credit that with me sticking with playing bass.
My current favorite bass is a 2010 Squier VM P:

Mine was a Washburn Lyon. The low end of a lower end brand..lol.

It was a Pbass fake. Worked for me as a kid. I would have played anything.

1st real Bass.. '62 Fender P-Bass, I played from '68 'till '76. (I put a Jazz Neck on it...that went ski jump bad)

Bass now Warmoth P-5.... yeah.. I love the P pickup

I've played A LOT of different Basses since I started (47 years ago..) and I always seem to return to the "Fender" styles (P, J, String Ray, and G&L...) all others fall by the wayside.. (Though I do still have my Lakland 55-01 that I customized...)

My first bass was a 24" scale, 1962 Carvin bass. My main bass now is a 5 string Variax.

first bass was a black 1985 Fender Jazz Bass, never really bonded that particular bass.
now I have mostly P's, a couple J's and a Sabre.
not much has changed.

I started out in the early/mid 70's playing a Gibson Grabber with the sliding pickup. I now play Fender, MM but mainly G&L these days.

My first was a tan vinyl coverd solid body Hofner bass bought in a Beale street pawn shop. I then had a '70 pbass. Didn't like either of them much,and got a Ric 4000,which i loved. This was all around '73-75. Nowadays, i have a (diferent) Ric 4000 in my arsenal that i love. (Along with a Ric Laredo,Ric Cii,Carvin fretless ac40,and a Carvin fretted ac50.)

My first bass was a gift from a girlfriend. A used late 70's/early '80's Ibanez Roadstar Precision copy.

My main bass is a Fodera now but I still have a soft spot for Precisions and have not been without a P since (1985 or so).
