I did this on one of my basses. It works fine. A little brighter (as others have mentioned). Engineers hate it. I do not recommend this mod. If the engineer wants a little extra brightness, there are much easier ways to achieve that.

I think you already got the best budget suggestion (the TC Spark) but that said, you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to own a Klon Clone. Guitar World recently did a shootout, "Best Klon Clones For Every Budget."

In the genre of slap/pop bass, the standard technique for muting the E string, is with your left-hand thumb. You have my "permission" to mute that way, if it's more comfortable for you. Here's a pic of Victor Wooten playing slap style:

Bandleader provides the PA. If the singer isn't the bandleader, then it isn't their responsibility.
