Any Rick Kemp/ Steeleye Span Fans Here?

I just heard one of their songs on the radio and had to look up the bass player. He's something special.

    Ashbory (Guild/DeArmond/Fender) Club

Just acquired my second Ashbory. This way I can alternate between two types of strings, which changes the sound substantially.

Amen. There's no shame in playing short-scales. I love my little Ashbory.

    Ashbory (Guild/DeArmond/Fender) Club

Where are people getting their replacement G strings? I bought the only remaining factory one, and a set of Aquila Thunderguts, from Large Sound a couple weeks ago.

    "Girl Bass Player Club" here!

Thanks! It went really well. The trickiest thing was singing lead while playing bass -- it's still hard to avoid looking down at my hands at this point, but I managed to keep it to a minimum. The songs where I was just backing others went easily. And overall the whole thing was fun!

    "Girl Bass Player Club" here!

I just had my first gig on bass last weekend. It was very fun to stand up and move around while playing - quite a change from performing behind a keyboard!

I'm taking my Ashbory out for its first gig this Saturday. Excited!

Bands that change singers and didn't suck or die afterward...

Fleetwood Mac. They've been through ten different singers over the last 40 years or so without sucking or dying, mostly. Most of the time they've had more than one front person, which probably has helped with those transitions.

    Klezmer

YouTube is your friend here. If you're listening to Klezmer already you probably already have a sense of the chords and rhythms, so add to that watching what the bass players typically do -- lots of roots and fifths, walking up from the V to the i, etc.

    Breaking the mold

Experiment with co-writing. Co-writers will bring fresh ideas to the particular songs, and you'll get hands-on education in different processes you can use on your own too.

Who has your favorite bass sound ?

Many that have been mentioned here. Also Jean-Jacques Burnel.

    What Song are You Playing?

New bassist here. I started with Walking On the Moon (Police, oft-recommended for beginners in these forums) and now am playing Alison (Elvis Costello), as well as a handful of folk and rock originals to play with my band when I'm not playing keyboards.

Wisconsin Bassists Club - Part Three (Now a Trilogy)

I've bought equipment at Full Compass and they've always been helpful. I recommend calling first to make sure what you need is in stock.
