    Roger Waters is legit!

Nah, just thought I'd spice up my argument with a Rogers-esque rant, since it's a thread about him and all ;)

    Big Geezer Butler fan

Geezer just plays and plays the bass. He is probably top 3 as far as blues-based rock bassists go. He's not going to do licks up and down the neck but man is he in your face. To compare him to NFL runningbacks, if Geddy Lee or Chris Squire are Jim Kiick, Geezer Butler is Larry Csonka.

    Roger Waters is legit!

I know because I have heard Roger Waters play bass on plenty of **** and I know well enough to tell when he is not playing. You can be a good bassist and not play flashy. You can be a great bassist and not put 100% into a song. Waters is no Chris Squire, and that's not what the Floyd needed...

    Overrated Bass Players

Cliff Burton - Most people tend to associate him passing with "old Metallica" disappearing, so they glorify him. His bass playing was really wicked on Anesthesia, Kthulu, and Orion, but if you listen to the isolated tracks he is really sloppy, making me wonder why he didn't play with a pick...

    Roger Waters is legit!

My man, I have no animosity towards Rogers. Look at all great bass parts after Dark Side and tell me Gilmour didn't write/play them. I don't believe David when he says "I played most of the bass parts", but I know for a fact Gilmour played on a lot of Animals and on the nicer lines of The...

    Roger Waters is legit!

I want Waters to be a great bass player because he's such a cool dude. However, it's pretty clear that from Dark Side on he no longer had interest playing bass. Most of the great bass lines after Dark Side are attributed or supposedly attributed to Gilmour. Rogers' bass playing shined in...

Help me find a used bass + amp locally?

OP, I live in ABQ. Check out Grandma's Music Store on the Westside. A bit of a drive if you live east of the river but their used selection is very good and very reasonably priced. If you have not bought a bass yet I would suggest going there. If my weekend wasn't so busy I'd even offer to...

    Geezer butler technique

From what I understand he played over the neck on Black Sabbath and Paranoid with a Fender P, which is why his tone is so...muddy(?)...and it growls like hell. I guess it's a bit like slapping but not quite as percussive. The Paris 1970 show is a good example. Post Paranoid I think he uses a...

Played a Gibson SG and hated it..

I bought a Waterstone short scale bass used for pocket change basically, and it turned me off to short scale basses. I like playing it, but cannot play it without a pick because of string spacing, and at that point it no longer feels like I'm playing bass because I'm playing a guitar-sized bass...

'02 MIM Standard Jazz finally in the house..

Very nice find on the MIM Fender. My first bass was a MIM Fender P. Biggest issues with the MIM's are the pickups and wood, but if you really want to make that thing purr buy some new pickups for $60-$120 and make your bass at least sound like a $600 bass.

Big Bodied basses for playing heavy music.

I'm a fan of a lot of styles of music, but one of my favorite styles, heavy metal, particularily Megadeth, Razor, Cannibal Corpse, Nuclear Assault, Slayer, etc., doesn't really have a lot of distinguished basses. Sure, there's the classic Rickenbacker, and a bunch of Ibanezes and Carvins, but...
