Is the 5 string a US phenomenon?

I used to own a 5, but now I just tune one of my 4s to BEAD. I don't really need the extra string, I just like having the lower notes.... The only people I know here who use a 5 are the guy I sold mine to and another guy in a metal band where the guitarist uses a 7... other than that 5s seem to...

Are Fender vintage Jazz/Precision basses versatile?

Yes. Definitely versatile. I only have Jazz basses and I play all sorts of music from Hip Hop to metal and blues... I can always find a great tone for whatever I'm playing.

How many of you guys use BEAD tuning?

Before I had my 5, I used to detune my 4 with EADG strings to BEAD. The strings go quite floppy (useless for slap) but with the right set of strings and a little practice you can adapt easily. This also gives your bass a very cool and unusual tone. I'd suggest trying this. You doin't need to...

It's wierd to think... how old is your bass?

My oldest bass is more of an odd collector's piece, it's from the 70's like me... It's an Orfeus Hebros from Soviet era Bulgaria. It's a pretty low quality piece of gear and unfortunately it's going to take a bit of work to get her going again. I just love that paint job though... My oldest...

Anyone use their effects for vocals?

Analogue delay while tweaking the delay time knob sounds cool if you time it right. Actually digital would probably sound more or less the same. A Boss AW-3 on the "humanizer" mode sounds kinda cool if you fight the vowel sound it's trying to make (ie vocalise an "A" when the effect is pushing...

Opinions on Jazz Am. Std. V ?

I have an Am Std Jazz V, it's a '97 though. I do, however, also own a 4 string Am Std from last year. Putting aside the differences due to number of strings, I'd have to say that they feel and sound pretty similar. I do find the low B useful and even detune the whole bass to A sometimes. The...

    Bassists with Beards Club

Oh... this is definitely the club for me. Basses are awesome. Beards are awesome. I'm glad that someone has formally recognised that combining the two is also awesome. Sign me up. (Pictures of me, my beard and my bass will be coming shortly).

    The Mediocre Bassist Club.

My bass playing used to be "slightly better than average" about ten years ago when I had a decidedly mediocre bass... now that I've taken up playing again, I decided to get myself a really nice bass. Unfortunately now my playing is mediocre... at least I don't feel like the bass is limiting me...
