    Fingering when playing scales

Thanks all. The idea of practising higher up the neck hadn't occurred before - sounds really useful. As does the idea of trying to play the scales on one or two strings. Will have a stab at both. Sounds, on balance, like training myself to play OFPF is the way forward. Cheers again!

    Fingering when playing scales

Sorry if this has come up before, but I couldn't find anything... When I started practising scales, I used three fingers on my fretting (left) hand only. Now, I'm trying to integrate my pinky as much as possible, but it seems a bit awkward when practising scales, even if that's an ideal way...

Amp and PU settings when creating effects

That's v. good advice - thanks - easy to forget that an effect is just that, instead of a tone in itself. (Sort of.)

Amp and PU settings when creating effects

Thanks bongomania. The bass amp I use at home is a tiny 10W practice one with no pre-amp, so there's nothing to bypass (unless I've got the wrong end of the stick). Thanks all the same. To expand on my first message - one of the reasons for asking is that I once created a Muse-esque distorted...

Amp and PU settings when creating effects

A search yielded nothing useful, so I hope someone can help... I'm about to sit down with my BP200 (I know, a bit amateurish) to try and create some useful effects - nothing fancy, more to get my head around simple things like compression, and how I can make some subtle but interesting...

    Bass styles

Originally put this in the 'Bassists' forum (because of the second question), but should really have gone here... (will try and delete the other one to avoid crossposting). Help much appreciated. Very dumb question coming up... I'm still relatively new to bass, having previously played the...

    First ever gig tonight

It took about 4 bars - we opened with 'No One Knows' to ease any nerves and warm ourselves up (we had been doing that song for months in band practice). Certainly recommend starting with a number everyone's comfortable with - next time, we'll hopefully do that with more of a crowd pleaser.

Bass tone - I get very confused

Thanks all. Especially like Fender32's point about voice and tone - looks like I was lumping together too many things into the 'tone' bracket. Think I just need to try more basses, amps, pick-ups, etc - esp the PUs, by the look of things. So as a sort of follow-up to Q2 in my OP - I've got P/J...

Bass tone - I get very confused

This could go in any one of several forums, but it's here for now - can move it if need be. From what I've gleaned over the short time I've played the bass, there are quite a few things that affect how a bass sounds (in terms of both its tone, and how 'good' it sounds): - the wood the bass...

    First ever gig tonight

I'm sure it'll be great. When's the gig? What sort of stuff are you playing?

    First ever gig tonight

Cheers again everyone. It went brilliantly - so much fun playing live! Gutted it's all over - been 5 weeks of blood, sweat and tears, during which we expanded our fledgling band's repetoire of songs from 3 to 16 (13 of which made it in last night). Really strange it's now all finished...

    First ever gig tonight

Cheers all! We're pretty much covered in terms of back-up for when things go wrong. Just a case of playing, and playing rather well (hopefully). Think it'll be a lot of fun - will be a very friendly crowd, who all know us and don't yet know we're playing. Some good fun songs for them in the...

    First ever gig tonight

Playing my first gig ever tonight (not counting a 2 minute performance on the drums I did over 10 years ago as a kid). Band is only a few months old, and have played bass for exactly as long as that. We sound OK, but I'm mildly terrified. Playing a set of covers for our work ball, which I...

Stacking in thirds - significance of adding the 7th?

Right, makes sense - fully appreciate colouring and flavouring the chord with 7ths and 9ths and so forth; was more confused why there's emphasis on the 7th in mode theory. JTE's post makes sense in that respect. Cheers all!
