Best musical advice you ever got

"Don't learn/play bass. Learn/ play music." (-unknown) Always know which one you are doing...

Last Albums You Listened To In Their Entirety?

Quuensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime because it's just plain wrong to listen to it any other way :D

Another possible idiotic question. Why 124 fingering instead of 123?

My guitarist only uses 1-2-3, which I find kind of strange... He told me he has never used his pinky to fret a note (intentionally) before and he's played for 10+ years at this point. There's nothing wrong with that finger at all though, anatomically or physically... he just doesn't know how to...

Another possible idiotic question. Why 124 fingering instead of 123?

I have a much easier time 1-2-4'ing everything that's spread out over more than a couple frets apart. My hands are small so it feels more relaxed/less strained if I grab the frets that are closest to my ring finger with my pinky instead. My pinky is much stronger than my ring finger and better...

Debating on monitors vs. new headphones...

Burning thru my 3rd pair of Sennheiser HD280's, they probably won't make it past New Year's given the shape they're in... Before I go out and spend another $100-150 to replace them, I'm wondering if it might be better to save a little extra cash and splurge on a pair of studio monitors. I'm...

How much are you willing to compromise stylisticly for a good band?

I feel kinda the same way as you. Ain't nothing wrong with having a good unique style, but there certainly ain't nothing wrong with being a GOOD solid band (even if you're totally ripping off another artist or style and sound unoriginal)... when I'm out drinking and having a good time at a...

One or Two guitar players in band?

Also depends on the style of music you play and each particular song. If you can get it done with 1, that's the way to go IMHO. The biggest benefit is how much simpler things become when you have one less musician to accommodate in rehearsal or on stage. Things can get complicated very quickly...

    Why mic a bass cab?

Gotcha. I'm not that invested in my gear. It's functional for playing shows, decent amp/average-sounding cab. My bass tone is not something to wet yourself over and I've given up tinkering with it because it hardly makes any difference in the mix. Doesn't sound like it's worth the investment to...

I have a confession regarding the band Rush.

Vital Signs Haha even I can't listen to Xanadu all the way thru most of the time... I do love that song (at least most of it haha), but being a Rush fan does not require me to love every song or even every part of every song they've ever written. I think it's awesome that you want to give Rush...

    Why mic a bass cab?

Obviously that's true... I guess I meant to ask more along the lines of when or why the sound from an amp+cab be preferable to that from a DI, in general. I understand that they are just two different ways to accomplish the same thing in the studio. But isn't DI'ing a passive bass not an issue...

Can't hear my drummer's kick drum...

Not really, I'm usually always standing in front of him. I have tried that approach before though, but my vision is not great and a lot of the songs we play aren't slow enough... trying to watch/focus on something that starts and ends that quickly while listen and play at the same time just...

    Why mic a bass cab?

Haha very snarky indeed, but a good point nonetheless.

I have a confession regarding the band Rush.

It only starts with one or two songs... That's all you need to start to get into a band. Then you branch out from there and find more that you like. I love Rush- they quickly became one of my favorite bands when I was in college, and it started from 2 tunes: Tom Sawyer and Limelight. I heard...

One or Two guitar players in band?

I'm on the fence... I play in a cover band with 1 guitarist. My best friend plays in a cover band with 2 (of which he is the rhythm guitarist). I saw his band play live recently and was impressed by the twin guitar sound. They just worked very well together, sounded distinct enough that you...
