Can anyone explain to me, from a producer's standpoint, why one would want to mic a bass amp when recording? My band and I don't not have the equipment to mic bass or used a studio that did, but that's besides the point...
-Is their any particular benefit to micing bass?
-Is it more suitable for certain styles of music?
-Can you tell just from listening to a recording if the bass is being mic'd?
-How would you describe the difference in sound?
-Is it one of those things that has to be done just right and by someone who knows what they are doing to be worth attempting?
-Most of my favorite music was recorded in the 60's-90's, all genres. Was micing bass more common and standard production practice back then? Put another way, am I
most likely hearing a bass that was mic'd when I listen to any major production that was released during that time period? That doesn't seem to be the case anymore. DI'ing bass isn't limited to lower budget productions today. From what I gather, there are lots of engineers who do have the resources to mic a bass and still prefer not to.
Feel free to answer as many or few of those questions... Thanks!
