Just started to learn how to tap and i cannot tap loud at all. I end up having to turn my amp up to hear it. Am I using the wrong technique? do i have to change my EQ settings? iv heard a compressor might help. please give me some feedback.

I was looking into changing the stock pickups on my fender p and it seems almost impossible too do unless you take off all the strings but I also read some where that taking off all the strings damages the neck. So I guess my question is does taking off all the strings damage the neck?
