    Canada Toronto Ont. GTG......

Hey, thanks for the responses :) Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that TB is the main source of information for most bass players. But, perhaps there are some sections of TB that each of you gravitate towards more than others. And perhaps there are also non-TB sources that...

    Canada Toronto Ont. GTG......

Fellow Toronto Bassists, I don't mean to derail this thread or anything, but I was wondering: Would any of you be willing to participate in a study I'm doing? I'm a student at U of T and I'm exploring how bass players seek information. My research involves two things: 1) A short interview...

    Best passive P/J set?

+1 I have an old Ibanez that I was considering getting rid of. After replacing its pickups and preamp with an npj4sv set, and 3B-5b preamp, I have done a complete 180° turn. This bass is now my go-to bass for pretty much everything. Most of the time, I don't even use the preamp - the pickups...

What is your favourite PJ Fender?

I was so inspired by the used Tony Franklin fretless I bought a couple of years ago that I decided to get the fretted version as well. I have had it for over a year now, and let me just say... It is an AMAZING instrument. Really, I can't get enough of its tone and playability, and neither can...

    Favourite bass for slap?

I voted P bass because I love how absolutely raunchy it sounds when you slap it. Plus, I find that P basses require little to no eq-ing in order to sit well in a mix, regardless of how I play them. That being said, I do love the sound of slap bass on Jazzes and Stingrays. I imagine that if I...

    Most aggressive bass tone?

I love how aggressive and over the top Andy Rourke's bass sounds in some of the tracks from this live Smiths show, particularly "This Charming Man" and "Barbarism Begins at Home". Hard to believe that anyone could make a P-bass sound like that... wow :D:

    Versatile Basses!

Great suggestions and links so far :) I'm surprised, though, that no-one has mentioned the Variax bass yet. From what I can tell, it's just insanely versatile:

    That "Sadowsky Sound"

Ever since I came across this bass player's channel, I have been seriously considering making my first Jazz bass a Sadowsky: http://www.youtube.com/user/meterumete It sounds amazing no matter what he does to it. Fingerstyle, slap/pop, playing with a pick, aggressive eqing, etc.

    In Your Words...P vs. J ??

I felt really inspired to share this recording of an insanely aggressive sounding P-bass. Definitely check out the song "Barbarism Begins at Home": :)

Your dream PJ and Preamp config...

I was considering buying a new bass to replace my old 24 fret Ibanez PJ, but decided I would try replacing the pickups and preamp first. I installed a Nordstrand npj4sv set and Nordstrand 3B-5b preamp in the bass and it completely came to life! I cannot begin to tell you how much I love this...

    Tony Franklin Signature Bass Club

Good question, BassBeard. I always assumed that they don't have the graphite-reinforced necks because the TFs are modeled after a 70s style Precision, and Fender didn't use graphite-reinforced necks back then. I have a question about the TF line, too: Is the jazz pup in the 60s or 70s...

PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINION ON MY RIG

I agree with many of the responses in this thread. If having a wider EQ on hand is important to you, then try leaving the Peavey head at home and picking up a small bass EQ pedal. And if simulating a wide variety of heads or cabinets is important to you, then go through each amp setting on the...

    School me on P basses

If neck thickness affects tone, then it's not something I have ever noticed. I've always attributed neck tone to fretboard wood (i.e. rosewood, maple, ebony, etc.), degree or quality of reinforcement (i.e. steel truss rod, graphite truss rod, full out carbon fiber or graphite neck, etc.), and/or...

    School me on P basses

I can vouch for the pickup volumes being extremely well balanced on the Tony Franklins. There is little to no volume difference when switching from one pickup to the other, or when blending the two. Another feature I truly love about these basses is that the J pickup has adjustable hex poles...
