Basses that used to be cheap and have now gone WAY up in price.

Most everything is more money lately as production moves to "asia" ( they won't always even tell you the exact country ). My bass is made in Indonesia and is one of the rare Shecters that actually is stable and close to their earlier Korean stuff in quality. The construction of something as...

Is there a significant difference in tone between neck-through and bolt-on basses?

I guess it's obligatory that I say something too... :) I come from this a bit different in that I have a technical background in computers and electronics. Here's what it boils down to: It makes a big difference in an acoustic instrument or anything with a hollow body. The increased string...

How will Carvin contact me when my order's ready to ship and needs to be paid for?

IMO, "done" and "shipped" are different because before it gets shipped, it has to be set up and gone over by their in-house pros(plus tweaking and final polishing and so on). If something is wrong or needs fixing, it'll go back - if not, it ships a day or two later. Naturally, they charge when...

    Thinking of getting a Carvin.

The SB has massively upgraded electronics, though. The "deal" with Carvin is that they switched the way the sound blends together when they switched from 9V to 18V just a few years ago(less than five, IIRC). The sound IMO, isn't as defined on the 18V versions - the tone controls seem to work...

How will Carvin contact me when my order's ready to ship and needs to be paid for?

Yeah, everyone goes to their website and the site lies. It deceives. It's evil because you click on it 20X a day hoping for some change... ;) It'll be done when it's done.

OMG... check out this craigslist beaster!

I'd personally grind off/nicely cut off the "wings" and make it rounded at the back. That also would drop half of the weight and make it playable as well. How much it's worth? Not $400... heh.

How will Carvin contact me when my order's ready to ship and needs to be paid for?

The common solution is to just get two J pickups. Use one or both together as you wish - it's not going to hurt anything by having a second pickup of the same type.

    Finally settled on a bass

Yeah the Alnico HBs are good - the regular ones are pretty much a "pickup". But you can swap pickups pretty easily and transform the bass rather drastically.

How will Carvin contact me when my order's ready to ship and needs to be paid for?

Carvin thankfully doesn't ship until it's ready. One bass I had from them - gosh - a LONG time ago - had to be re-done at a almost two weeks more time due to it not being "right" according to them(got a little card stating the fact in the mail - and apologizing for the delay). Every bass is...

    Finally settled on a bass

Yeah, but the quality and choices at the lower end is really three basses - Yamaha, Fender, and Ibanez. I personally like the look and feel of the Ibanez the best, but they have the worst pickups of the three. Yamaha has seriously high action and a big neck - harder for smaller hands like...

A good bass meeting these specs...

Well, for a little more money, you can get a nearly identical(but much better sounding) Carvin. They are probably as close to that look and style that I can think of. Ebay Item number: 260574397979 This is purple, but they did make a bass that was like that about 20 years ago. This one is...
