How bad (or good) was your first bass?

My first bass guitar I think someone made in wood shop. Huge neck with no tension rod and no frets. There was a volume control but no tone control. The pick guard was red plexiglas with crumpled aluminum foil behind it. That was around 1965. It might have sounded good plugged into a decent...

    NBD part 1

I have been wanting a semi-hollow bass to match my Epiphone Dot someday, and now I will have one some day. I saw a guitar kit on eBay for a left handed jazz guitar that looked pretty cool. By the time I went to buy one they were gone, but I saw the seller had these. I probably should have...

    NGD!!! Christmas edition

Besides that channel being generally exceedingly pleasant, it also has quite a bit of high end to it, which may be a secondary reason the channel is named that. I got wonderful clean tones with my Les Paul and the amp volume turned up to about 1.5. I love the mid range boost. Today I will line...

    NGD!!! Christmas edition

New Gear Day!, and I use the term "new" advisedly. 1966 Vox Viscount 1151. Not real pretty on the outside but has inner beauty. Even cranked up there's no buzzing or belching. 35 watts coming out of two 12" Vox Bulldog (made by Oxford) speakers. Three channels, NORMAL with a Top Boost switch...

    Is this a Fender cabinet?

Yea, somebody built that cabinet, but it's got the rough tolex, the maroon speaker cloth, tilt legs, maybe Fender corners.... It looks pretty good from 6 feet away. It's from back in the day when that's what we did. I built a cabinet for my Silvertone Twin Twelve because the one that came...

Tired of lugging around a heavy ass amp

I played drums in a band with a bass player that used a Marshall bass head and a cabinet that was at least 5' tall. He would always ask us to lift the head up onto the speaker cab because he had "a bad back". Two of us would grab the thing and lift it there. When he thought no one was around...

    Is this a Fender cabinet?

There's a guy in the next town over that has been working on amps since the 60's. He also said it wasn't a Fender cabinet, and he wanted to buy it for an old Fender head he has in his shop.

    Is this a Fender cabinet?

The speaker cabinet for my 1961 Bassman 6G6-A is 20" x 30" x 11.5", which doesn't quite match dimensions for any Fender cabinet I can find. Speakers are Oxford 12M6-1. It's well made, but could be some other brand in disguise or home made.Opinions and clever comments welcome. Thanks

Bass inspired name for a dog.

Way back in the 60's our bass player had a Vox violin bass and Vox Essex bass amp. When they got a dog he named the dog Essex.

Prospective “buyer” wants serial number. Thoughts?

In the vintage sax forum where I hang out serial numbers are given out in the format 123xxx . That is close enough to determine what year the horn was built.

    How diverse is your GAS?

There's a guy (woody?) in the ugly bass amp thread with a '61 Showman. That inspired me with desire. I have a '62 Bassman, but I would trade it for a Showman with the same knobbage. Also I have been Jonesing for a real left handed 4005.

How many basses does a pro need?

When I drumming for a metal band that almost broke out our bass player broke at least one string a night. He brought a spare bass so he could swap out while his roadie replaced the broken string. I don't know how many basses he had back at the ranch.
